Australia's links to South America have just gotten a bit closer, but not due to economic forces, rather fossil forces. University of Queensland palaeontologist Dr Steve Salisbury was part of an international team of palaeontologists from the US, Argentina and Australia that identified a fossil that had previously only been found in South America.

In the England v South Africa series we hope there will be no repeat of the Dean Jones commentary moment when he called Hashim Amla "the terrorist". Indeed, it will be poignant watching the South African tonk it around the park. As millions cowered under apartheid, a Muslim representing South Africa would have been fantastical. Now, some say this builder of handsome hundreds could eventually captain his country, despite covering the logo for Castle Lager on his shirt: truly, South Africa is the rainbow nation.

Science News has a story of strange bedfellows. It seems that Antarctica was once adjacent to what is now the American Southwest, some 800 million years ago. Earth's continents then formed a supercontinent called Rodinia, predating Pangaea by some 550 million years. "...the ratios of neodymium isotopes in the ancient sediments in the Transantarctic Mountains are the same as those in what was then Laurentia, says Goodge. Also, the hafnium isotope ratios in the 1.44-billion-year-old zircons found in East Antarctica match those of the zircons found in the distinctive granites now found primarily in North America. Finally, the researchers note, the ratios of various isotopes and elements in a basketball-sized chunk of granite found in East Antarctica — a chunk ripped by a glacier from bedrock now smothered by thick ice, the team speculates

July 18, 2008 (FinancialWire) American Airlines Inc., a subsidiary of AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) have settled a trademark-infringement lawsuit by the carrier against the search engine. Terms of the dismissal were not disclosed in court records. In the judgment issued Thursday, U.S. District District Court Judge John McBryde said American will recover nothing from Google. The case centered on sponsored links that Google lists next to search results that it provides to its users. American claimed this practice violates its trademarks when a keyword search is done using the airline s trademarks, such as its name. Shares of AMR Corp. rose $1.09, or 18.73 percent, to close at $6.91, while shares of Google fell $2.16 to close at $533.

Scientists have found that the compound resveratrol slows age-related deterioration and functional decline of mice on a standard diet, but does not increase longevity when started at middle age. This study, conducted and supported in part by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, is a follow-up to 2006 findings that resveratrol improves health and longevity of overweight, aged mice. The report confirms previous results suggesting the compound, found naturally in foods like grapes and nuts, may mimic, in mice, some of the effects of dietary or calorie restriction, the most effective and reproducible way found to date to alleviate age-associated disease in mammals.

Reports from South Africa suggest that a cybercrime syndicate there has defrauded the government of more than 199 million Rand (UKP Ł12.8 million) in a series of spyware infection-driven frauds. The frauds, which were revealed on Tuesday by the South African Minister for Finance and Economic Development, has resulted in 32 arrests in connection with more than 80 fraud counts. Commenting on the case - thought to be South Africa's largest reported cybercrime spree by a single gang - Geoff Sweeney, CTO with IT security vendor Tier-3, said that spyware attacks are notoriously difficult to stop in their tracks owing to their unpredictable nature. "The evolution of malware has reached the point where the lines are blurring between viruses, trojans and what we call multi-vector IT security threats.

eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) is in talks to acquire a minority stake in GMarket, a South Korean online auctioneer. The talks are with Interpark Corp., the Korean portal that owns 37 percent of the company. A spokesperson from eBay told AP that there was no certainty a deal would be reached or that it would be approved by South Korean regulators—eBay already owns a South Korean competitor, the aptly named Internet Auction. No deal terms have been announced, although shares of NASDAQ-listed GMarket shot up over 14 percent on the news. In 2006, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) took a 10 percent stake in GMarket, so they’re a beneficiary of this as well.
