The demands people have on the fish worldwide and the rate at which the fish can be harvested without endangering them are totally different things, researchers at the SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture say. According to their statistics, an average person today consumes about 15 kilograms (30 pounds) of fish per year. Considering that the global population is increasing quickly, SINTEF president Karl Andreas Almĺs predicts that the quantities of fish harvested on the globe will have to be increased twofold over the next 20 years.

O.K., O.K., we get it. There are some things we just can't have. You can't have a little cellphone with a big screen. You can't have a big car that gets amazing gas mileage. And you can't have a little camera that takes pro-quality photos.

The President of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, Karl Andreas Almås, crouches over his laptop, opens one of his presentations and finds an illustration. It shows one red curve and one blue one. He then indicates the point where they meet each other, then frowns and says the message he cannot repeat often enough: There is a huge gap between world demand for fish and what we can harvest from the world’s natural stocks. The figures are clear: If we don’t do something about the over fishing, the stocks of wild fish will be dealt a death blow.

Location-based services, such as finding the nearest gas station, require users to supply their location information. However, a user's location can be tracked without her consent or knowledge. Lowering the spatial and temporal resolution of location data sent to the server has been proposed as a solution. Although this technique is effective in protecting privacy, it may be overkill and the quality of desired services can be severely affected. This paper suggests a framework where uncertainty can be controlled to provide high quality and privacy-preserving services, and investigate how such a framework can be realized in the GPS and cellular network systems.

Korean researchers said yesterday that they have developed a robot that can dance to music and may someday do the dishes. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology team led by You Bum-jae said the Mahru can freely move both its upper and lower body parts. The robot is the first from Korea that can walk on its legs. You said it is programed to follow human movements through an advanced motion capture system, and designed to cope with interference while moving its hands. Mahru can also dance to two songs. The laboratory said the Mahru series opens new horizons in robotics because these machines may be developed to do everyday chores like wash dishes, open doors and make deliveries. [YONHAP]

(AGI) - Washington, Nov. 9 - Ipod earphones an MP3 players can cause interference with pacemaker and defibrillator devices, revealed a study of the American Heart Association, which recommends that patients use caution and keep earphones far from the thorax. This reason for this is a neodymium, a magnetic substance contained in earphones which can impede the correct functioning of pacemakers and can even momentarily disconnect the device. According to the study, interference occurs only in patients that place the earphones three centimetres from their heart. The study concluded that patients with pacemakers and defibrillators can use ipods and MP3 players, but have to be careful when they put their earphones on avoiding however, putting them in jacket or shirt pockets keeping them too close to their chest.

An alarming new study in the Annual Review of Environment and Resources contends that fully one-third of the world's marine fish catches are ground up and fed to farm-raised fish, pigs, and poultry. The researchers involved say that this squandering of "forage fish" (anchovies, sardines, menhaden, and other small- to medium-sized fish) is rapidly worsening the already serious overfishing crisis in our oceans.

There is a wide-spread belief in the Web design world that if you're a programmer, that automatically means that you can't be a good designer. Something about the nature of programming made it impossible for them to have a decent stylistic sense. This was probably aggravated by the fact that programmers stereotypically wear mis-matched socks, plaid shirts, broken glasses, and pocket protectors. After all, if they can't be bothered with how their wardrobe looks, how can they possibly know what looks good on a website? Whether or not this is true (and one of the best designers I ever met was also a crack programmer - and I don't think I ever told him I thought so, sorry Steve!) nearly everyone can benefit from this article on Stefano's Linotype Why Programmers Suck at CSS Design.

"When you get a bunch of remote SSH sessions going it's easy to lose track of where you really are, because all you see are boring old generic prompts. Sure, they show the hostnames, but it's still easy to get confused. Which can be a bit amusing when you issue a reboot command to the wrong computer, or send a cranky broadcast message to all users on the wrong system. An easy way to keep track is to colorize and customize the Bash prompt on your remote systems, so you can easily differentiate them from your local login. You can assign different colors and text for different machines and accounts. For example, you can make the prompt turn green and display the text "THIS IS AN SSH SESSION"..."

"Art has the power to heal, to unite, and to express feeling when words sometimes can't be found. It can pay tribute to someone and serve as a constant symbol of the unique spirit within. If we look at great art through history, it can tell us so much about people and places through nonverbal communication. Grief can be so overwhelming, and hits us when we least expect it. Art supercedes linear and logical thinking, and can capture feelings that aren't always explainable through words," said Adrienne Crowther, Owner of Shine On Brightly. "The idea for Shine On Brightly was developed from a lifelong passion for art, and the belief that every life deserves to be honored and celebrated. We're located in Asheville, North Carolina, but our products are available worldwide.

The C++ compiler has the ability to produce both native and managed instructions. The /clr compiler switch is the basic option for turning managed instruction generation on and off, but beginning with Visual C++ 2005, finer grained control over managed instruction generation is possible. Managed code can be written using C++/CLI in a manner that is verifiably type-safe, which means that it can be statically analyzed to ensure that it only accesses the member variables and methods of a type correctly. Without verifiable type safety, pointer arithmetic can be used to access methods and member variables indirectly, potentially bypassing the inbuilt security checks that are present in the .NET runtime. A binary that is verifiably type-safe can be hosted in more environments, like SQL Server and hosted environments, and can be deployed in more
