Choose the right JDBC driver for your database interface

You may or may not have an enterprise client, but if you're using Java, you already know that presentation isn't everything: database access is as crucial a design consideration as the interface. The Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API is your all-purpose link between applications and your databases. Based on Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technology, JDBC is relational database-friendly and supports SQL. With the correct driver, you can use this API to connect to any database that supports an ODBC interface. Putting it another way, if your application is three-tier, you can use JDBC to create a layer of abstraction between your business logic level and your data level: all you need to slip is a new database in place under your apps as new drivers.

First DNA Molecule Constructed from Mostly Synthetic Components

ScienceDaily is reporting that Japanese chemists have created the world's first DNA molecule comprised of almost entirely artificial components. The breakthrough could lead to advances in both medicine and technology, possibly utilizing the massive storage capacity of DNA. "In the new study, Masahiko Inouye and colleagues point out that scientists have tried for years to develop artificial versions of DNA in order to extend its amazing information storage capabilities. As the genetic blueprint of all life forms, DNA uses the same set of four basic building blocks, known as bases, to code for a variety of proteins used in cell functioning and development. Until now, scientists have only been able to craft DNA molecules with one or a few artificial parts, including certain bases.

On the low end, there are b+tree-based systems, which are essentially just a database engine that is linked into the application and usually are without SQL support. As a lightweight database engine, hamsterdb fits into the latter category. It is very fast, but only supports the minimum needed operations. Specifically, it is embeddable, and therefore does not have the external dependencies or installation hassles of an SQL server.

j2 Global Sues Three Over Patents

Los Angeles-based electronic FAX service provider j2 Global Communications said this morning that it has filed three, separate patent infringement suits. j2 Global announced that it has sued Protus IP Solutions INc., Captaris Inc. and EasyLink Services International Corporation. All of the suits allege patent infringement on two of j2's patents, covering what j2 says are described as “Scalable Architecture for Transmission of Messages over a Network.” The lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas. In all of the cases, j2 Global is looking for monetary damages and injunctive relief from the firms. The new lawsuits come in addition to outstanding patent infringement lawsuits against both Protus and Captaris.

Roland Piquepaille writes "Japanese researchers have found a way to build long threads of DNA using miniaturized hooks and bobbins. In fact, they've demonstrated how to manipulate delicate DNA chains without breaking them. They've designed these laser-directed microdevices to pick up and manipulate individual molecules of DNA. The scientists have used optical tweezers to catch and move these microdevices, which could be used in the future to detect genetic disorders such as Down's syndrome."
