A nationwide consortium led by the University of Washington in Seattle has completed the first sequence-based map of structural variations in the human genome, giving scientists an overall picture of the large-scale differences in DNA between individuals. The project gives researchers a guide for further research into these structural differences, which are believed to play an important role in human health and disease. The results appear in the May 1 issue of the journal Nature.

A Genome in Any Format

In a recent post, Andrew Yates asked, "How much data is a human genome?" He then did a little math to show that an uncompressed diploid human genome would easily fit on two music CDs, if stored as a text file. That got Genetic Future's Daniel MacArthur thinking. There are, he says, other formats that a human genome could be stored in, including as images from an Illumina machine. In that format, a genome with 30x coverage would take up about 28.80 terabytes. Also, if the sequence data is stored as a Sequence Read Format file, the storage space'll top out at 1.98 terabytes.

Ancestry Surprises From New Genetics Analysis Method

An anonymous reader commends a recently published study involving a new way to analyze genetic variation in human populations (full article published in PLOS Genetics): "[S]cientists from Ireland, the UK and the US analysed 2,540 genetic markers in the DNA of almost 1,000 people from around the world whose genetic material had been collected by the Human Genome Diversity Project. The results include a number of surprises... the Yakut people of northern Siberia were found to have received a significant genetic contribution from the population of the Orkney Islands, which lie off the coast of Scotland... there must have been a period of gene flow from northern Europe to east Asia. The study also shed light on the peopling of the Americas, as the results suggest that the native populations of north and south America have different origins.

This project is a worldwide research effort that will involve the sequencing of 1,000 genomes from people from around the world to create the most detailed and medically useful picture to date of human genetic variation. On April 23rd, Google introduced new brand-image mobile search ads, a move that further extends the Internet giant's reach into the mobile Internet advertising bazaar. Google's new brand-image ads are scaled to fit the smaller screens of mobile devices. Google says the new mobile ads must link to Web sites optimized for mobile Internet use and that there is a limit of one display ad per page. The new mobile ads will be targeted to the mobile user's keyword search and will be offered as a cost-per-click to advertisers in 13 countries.
