Bush Administration Refuses to Protect Endangered Species Habitat in Michigan and Missouri National Forests

Chicago, IL (March 10, 2008) – Environmental groups challenged the federal government’s decision to exclude all national forest land from a recent endangered species ruling in federal court today. The suit filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Center for Biological Diversity, Northwoods Wilderness Recovery, Michigan Nature Association, Door County Environmental Council (DCEC) and the Habitat Education Center, charges that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s designation of critical habitat for the Hine’s emerald dragonfly violates the federal Endangered Species Act by excluding all 13,000 acres in Michigan’s Hiawatha National Forest and the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri.

Earlier this month the Canadian government has decided to reject the $1.3-billion bid by a US company, Alliant Techsystems (ATK), for the space division of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA). According to an ATK spokesman quoted in Space News, the “…issues touched on sensitive Canadian concerns about national security, national sovereignty and the protection of Canadian technology.” While some in the US may see this as an example of Canadian anti-Americanism, the fact that the Harper government is at all concerned with its national defense and national sovereignty is a big change from the previous Ottawa administration.

ISO and IEC approve Office Open XML document format standard

The International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have approved ISO/IEC DIS 29500, Office Open XML File Formats as an International Standard. Approval requires at least 2/3 (i.e. 66.66 %) of the votes cast by national bodies participating in ISO/IEC JTC 1 to be positive; and no more than 1/4 (i.e. 25 %) of the total number of national body votes cast negative. Both of these criteria were achieved, with 75 % of votes cast by national bodies participating in ISO/IEC JTC 1 being positive and only 14 % of all national votes cast being negative.
