Dionysius, God of Wine and Leaf, points out a story about the Russian government's interest in expanding anti-extremism laws to include the blocking of websites and ISPs. The laws would match those already in use for the country's print media. Russian internet users may soon be forced to deal with the same issues facing Chinese citizens. Quoting: "An official at the Russian prosecutor's general office, Vyacheslav Sizov, told the Russian-language newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta that any web site that is determined to host what he terms 'extremist material' would be blocked from being accessible from within the Russian Federation. Given the Putin government's history with the media, 'extremist material' may be very broadly interpreted as any content unfriendly to the interests of the Russian government.

Starting from January 1 2008 there have been developments in the Russian VAT legislation related to the introduction of new exemptions on activities in the technical innovation and research spheres. We believe that these new VAT rules may be interesting for foreign companies who provide such services to Russian customers, because under the Russian legislation such services are potentially within the scope of Russian VAT.

I've just returned from the industry's newest conference, LeadsCon, solely dedicated to the online customer acquisition industry. Founder and producer Jay Weintraub, a longtime Internet advertising strategist, uses the "online customer acquisition" term constantly because he has a broader vision for his industry. He hopes his new conference will help advance and elevate the online performance marketing industry, educating current players so they can not only grow within their current sectors but also expand beyond their traditional boundaries and help advance brands. Weintraub would like to see his industry thought of more as "starting the dialogue" with a prospective customer than as direct or data response marketing.

Officials from Russia's Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos) conducted on March 31 a series of drills and exercises at the Russian-leased, Soviet-era Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Interfax-Kazakhstan reported. The operation was part of a bilateral Russian-U.S. treaty on restricting strategic armaments, and also involved observers from the Kazakh and Russian Defense Ministries. The exercise was the first since Roskosmos assumed supervision of foreign inspections and visits of the facility in January 2008. The bilateral treaty also provides for on-site inspection of the facility. Russia has leased the Baikonur facility, one of the world's leading space facilities, since 1994. Baikonur is regularly used to launch commercial and military satellites, as well as supply missions for the International Space Station.
