The financial meltdown and the feeling of gloom and doom in the world has finally hit the one area that seemed recession-proof — the art market. Two recent auctions in London, by Sotheby’s and Christie’s have shown that buyers are staying away from high-priced contemporary art, with works even by Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor, all favourites of collectors, either remaining unsold or going for less than the estimate. In India, dealers quietly admit that art sales have slowed down and recent auctions of contemporary art did not attract rich non-resident Indians and foreign collectors. In fact, gallerists say this might be a good time to pick up art for reasonable prices.

ART centre inaugurated at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital

A state-of-the-art Anti Retro Viral Therapy (ART) centre was inaugurated at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here by Prof Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director, Global Fund on AIDS, TB and Malaria. The spacious ART centre has a unique air exchange system to avoid cross infection among patients at the centre who have low immunity level.
