Orchestra and Longwood perfect together: related news

Orchestra and Longwood - perfect together

When it comes to summer venues, the Philadelphia Orchestra has long looked over its shoulder at what others have, most enviously at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood.

Government fees and taxes are additional, as is a fuel surcharge for the first two people occupying a stateroom. After the special inaugural sailing, MSC Orchestra will sail alternating seven-night roundtrip itineraries through

Orchestra Baobab

Orchestra Baobab was formed in Senegal 1970. The hand-picked musicians produced a fantastic blend of Cuban and West African rhythms. Changing musical tastes saw the band break up in the late 80s. But Orchestra Baobab reformed in 2001 and recorded an album co-produced by another African music legend, Youssou N'dour. The music is brilliant. And people in Ontario had a rare chance to see the band perform live at Toronto's Harbourfront and the Ottawa Bluesfest in early July.

Orchestra's summer repertoire is rolling

No sooner did the Philadelphia Orchestra's summer at the Mann Center begin this week than it came to a close, at least for now. After three concerts in Fairmount Park, the orchestra takes off today for Colorado, where it will perform six programs in 10 days at the semi-outdoor (and excessively punctuated) Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival.

Orchestra Baobab

This 2007 release from Senegal's Orchestra Baobab comes a pretty fair stretch after their 2002 comeback, Specialist in All Styles. You can consider Made in Dakar a continuation of that comeback or a comeback all on its own. Either way, it's top notch. This band has vocal and instrumental chops even sharper than in their original heyday, with guitarist Barthelemy Attisso particularly spot on: check his perfect interplay with sax players Issa Cissoko and Thierno Koite and winding, slinky solos throughout. The West African/Latin connections are as strong as ever, both in the re-worked old songs and fresh compositions.

Weird Microwave "Robot" Makes Perfect S'mores

S'mores are definitely one of my all-time favorite snack foods and this weird Progressive International Microwavable S’Mores Maker claims to make 2 perfect s'mores in 30 seconds flat because the little "arms" keep the marshmallows from expanding to much. I still think you need a fire to make perfect s'mores, not some gadget that looks like a melted Mr. Potato Head—but if you insist on throwing your money away, the PIMSM can be had for $6.95. A Grid for Every Application

What can I tell you about the attributes of the perfect application for a Grid environment? Or, should you be asking about the perfect Grid environment for your application? As much as you would like these two questions to lead you to the same answer, they rarely, if ever, do. In this article, I will discuss what I like to call the Application Grid—the perfect Grid setup for your application. I am staying away from the term "virtualization" because it is too abstract, and means different things to different people.

A Cold War Meeting in Space 33 Years Ago Today

On July 17, 1975, something momentous and unprecedented happened: two Cold War-rivals met in space. The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project saw spacecraft from the United States and the Soviet Union docking together in space, ushering in a new era of cooperative ventures between the two countries that once were rivals in the "space race." Preparing for the mission, the astronauts and cosmonauts had to visit each other's countries for training, and the two space agencies had to share classified information with each other in order for the rendezvous and docking to work successfully. A few years ago, Tom Stafford, one of the American astronauts said the Apollo-Soyuz mission "showed the whole world that if the Soviet Union and America could work together in space, they could work together on the Earth.

Orchestra takes on 'Boheme' at Mann

Opera, staged or in concert, has been an intermittent and not especially well-adjusted visitor to the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. No mystery why: Operatic needs are numerous and specific in ways that don't sit well in an all-purpose venue. And opera in any setting has so many components that budgets go up and prospects of total success down. So respect and gratitude are in order for the Philadelphia Orchestra's coming so far out of its comfort zone to present a concert performance of La Boheme on Tuesday under Rossen Milanov, even if amid so many compromises you wondered if the effort was worth it.
