Covent Garden, Britain's foremost opera house, plans to stage a work based on the life of late Playboy model and reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith during its 2010-11 season. The libretto is being written by Richard Thomas, co-creator of the hit musical Jerry Springer: The Opera, which fringe Christian groups labelled as blasphemous. Mark-Anthony Turnage is composing the music. The decision to stage the work at the Royal Opera House in London may lead to renewed complaints the prestigious company is "dumbing down." Opera magazine accused Covent Garden bosses recently of "showing classic signs of mid-life crisis and going to unseemly lengths to get younger flesh on its seats." Ms. Smith died last year of an accidental prescription drug overdose aged 39.

wanderindiana brings us an update on the White House missing emails mess, which we have discussed before. It seems the hard drives of many White House computers are gone beyond the possibility of recovery. Is it unusual in your experience for, say, a corporate IT department to destroy hard drives by policy? "Older White House computer hard drives have been destroyed, the White House disclosed to a federal court Friday in a controversy over millions of possibly missing e-mails from 2003 to 2005. The White House revealed new information about how it handles its computers in an effort to persuade a federal magistrate it would be fruitless to undertake an e-mail recovery plan that the court proposed."

It has long been the wishes of many classical opera fans and sopranos alike that the heroine of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini's classic Turandot, Princess Turandot, had her own aria. And now that wish has just come true. In the new edition of the opera presented by the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) of China in March, the princess sang a beautiful and moving aria, named The First Tears, transforming herself in the process from a cold-hearted woman with infinite power into an ordinary girl falling in love with Prince Calaf, the hero of the opera.
