JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. Public Art: Olafur Eliasson's Waterfalls Transform New York

The buzz on "The New York City Waterfalls" was loud enough that a boatload of reporters chugged out into New York Harbor one recent steamy morning with the installation's artist, Olafur Eliasson, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a first, up-close look at the project: four cascades, ranging in height from 90 to 120 feet, installed at sites along the East River. The falls work by an elaborate system that pumps water up from the river, then lets it tumble down a tower of scaffolding. Not that you need to get on a boat to see them. There are good vantage spots along the river—and that's the point, says the 41-year-old Danish Icelandic artist. He wants New Yorkers to explore the waterfront that most of them have turned their backs on, to see their city in a new way.

Salma Hayek, Billy Joel, Angelina Jolie

Billy Joel bade a stirring farewell to Shea Stadium in New York during a sold-out final show at the same ballpark where the Beatles famously ushered in a new era in rock 'n' roll four decades ago. "They're gonna be tearing this place down, but I wanna thank you ... for letting me do the best job in the world," Joel told the crowd at the New York Mets' home field, which is to be razed after the baseball season to make way for a new stadium across the street. Other high-wattage guests also performed. Tony Bennett sang "New York State of Mind" with Joel, and Garth Brooks appeared on stage wearing a Mets jersey. In the audience, one of Joel's famous fans - his ex-wife Christie Brinkley - sang along, word for word, to the chorus of "She's Always a Woman.

Video Game Labeling Law Passed In New York

chareverie writes "A law just passed in New York now requires labels for violent content in video games that are already rated, as well as having parent-controlled lockout features installed in consoles by 2010. The law has caused an uproar with civil rights groups who claim that such a law is unconstitutional. A legal challenge is already in the works by the New York Civil Liberties Union who cite that similar laws that have been brought to courts in California, Illinois, Minessota, and Washington state have been deemed as unconstitutional. NYCLU legislative director Robert Perry also says that the 'new law is a "back door" way of regulating video game content.'"
