The idle speculation turns deadly serious when the man's identity is discovered, and it's up to the Council to contain the fallout. Then Cyndi's mom comes to visit, but what should be a joyous reunion is clouded by one small problem: Cyndi has lied to her mother about every single aspect of her life. Growing up in Scotland, Eddie Campbell had two ambitions: to be a cowboy and to work in the circus. After neither of those panned out, he shifted his sights to comics, gaining renown for his down-to-earth depictions of the Jack the Ripper slayings in Alan Moore's From Hell. More recently, Campbell has partnered with publisher First Second on the more experimental books The Fate of the Artist and The Black Diamond Detective Agency. This summer marks the third partnership between Campbell and First Second, as the publisher releases The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard in August (it's coauthored by Dan Best). From his home in Australia, Campbell spoke with PW Comics Week by e-mail about Leotard, which is set in the 19th century and follows the bizarre life of a man who stumbles into becoming a trapeze artist for a traveling circus.

Let's say your 20-year-old daughter runs up an astounding $5000 cellphone bill from talking to her good-for-nothing boyfriend too much. Do you a) cancel her service and make her get her own phone? b) reprimand her and block the offending number from the phone? c) grab her and spank her like she's seven. If you answered c), you just might be James Phillips of Portland, Maine, who did just that. He's now being charged with domestic violence. Make sure to keep an eye on your minutes, readers. BOOK REVIEW | 'ALFRED & EMILY': Doris Lessing looks back on shadows and parents

Doris Lessing once declared that "fiction makes a better job of the truth" than straightforward reminiscence, and while that might well be true of her celebrated and semi-autobiographical Martha Quest novels, it's an observation that doesn't apply at all to her latest book, "Alfred & Emily," an intriguing work that is half fiction, half memoir. The sketchy, insubstantial first half of the book imagines what her parents' lives might have been like if World War I had never occurred. The potent and harrowing second half recounts the real life story of her parents, and the incalculable ways in which the war fractured their dreams and psyches and left them stranded in the bush in Africa, eking out a meager existence on a tiny farm in Rhodesia.

A life without art and passionate love is a life unfulfilled. After seeing Woody Allen's new romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, he most certainly concurs. Best friends Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) vacation to Barcelona for a few months to experience another culture. Vicky is a graduate student engaged to be married, there to explore and study, while Cristina is a failed actress (a redux of her role in Match Point?); a free-spirit unencumbered by a past filled with heartache. Once there, they encounter a painting Spaniard named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who is equal parts intriguing and charming. He immediately proposes what most men would do in his situation, offering them a weekend getaway filled with exploration of art and love-making.

New 3G iPhone ads are here

Apple has posted latest ads for 3G iPhone on its website. Three in number, these adverts are titled Everyone, Unslow, Work Friendly. The ads extol the speed (compared with the original iPhone’s EDGE network) and GPS facilities of the 3G device and also focus on the price reduction i.e. twice as fast, half the price. The ad titled Everyone claims that everyone would like features that work at speed and still would like to pay half the price. Next in the list is Unslow, which touts the 3G features of new iPhone and the fact that internet is ‘twice as fast’. Finally the Work Friendly focuses on the work-related features (obviously) and ends with a line: ‘It works great…with work’. Check out all the three ads after jump.

Blog cafe A dog's legacy

Eyebrows were raised when Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog in her will, and they were raised even farther when it was learned recently that she had signed a "mission statement" indicating her wish that the charitable trust created by her will, which has an estimated $5 to $8 billion in net assets, be devoted to the welfare of dogs. The judge supervising the implementation of her will cut the bequest to her dog from $12 to $2 million, and it is uncertain how much of the charitable trust will actually be devoted to dogs.
