LOS ANGELES, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Viking River Cruises, the world's leading river cruise line, is supporting the efforts of Orange County's prestigious Bowers Museum to bring the largest display of Chinese Terra Cotta Warriors and related artifacts outside of China to Southern California. The Bowers exhibit, which recently ended a popular 7-month run at the British Museum, opens to the public Sunday, May 18. It will remain at the Bowers for nearly 5 months before it moves on to Atlanta, Georgia for installation at the High Museum. The exhibit will also stop at Houston's Museum of Natural Science before continuing to the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall in Washington D.C.

PHILADELPHIA—The Philadelphia Museum of Art board of trustees has announced the appointment of chief operating officer Gail Harrity as the museum's interim chief executive officer and of associate director of collections Alice Beamesderfer as interim head of curatorial affairs. Harrity joined the museum in 1997 as COO; Beamesderfer was first hired in 1987 and has served in a succession of positions, including special assistant to the director for projects and assistant director for collections. Both of their appointments, effective immediately, come in the wake of the unexpected death of Anne d'Harnoncourt, the museum's former director and CEO. A selection committee will be organized in the upcoming weeks to search for a permanent successor.

EDINBURGH—The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh will undergo a £46.4 million renovation, the Daily Express reports, leaving the museum's Victorian building closed until 2011. Among the planned features of the renovation are a redesigned entrance hall, 16 new galleries, the creation of a larger special exhibitions gallery, and a new learning center. The museum's modern building, built in 1988, will remain open to the public.

Portimaos new museum.PORTIMAO’S new municipal museum was inaugurated last week by the Minister of Culture, Pinto Ribeiro. The Museum is housed in an old sardine canning factory and it hosts regular, as well as temporary exhibitions that cover art, history and general culture, all of a local and national content. On permanent show are a large selection of donated artefacts from the region, such as industrial equipment, photographs, documents and archaeological and naval pieces, among others. The Central Intelligence Agency museum has been called "the best museum you never saw" because its location in the CIA headquarters building makes it off limits to visitors. NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne and his firm Morphosis will design the new home for the Orange County Museum of Art, reports the New York Times. The museum, which is currently located in Newport Beach, will move to a newly acquired piece of land at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
