Movie Review, Hellboy II

Although I'm not sure the corporate overlords will let me retroactively expense a movie ticket, I wanted to take a few minutes to write my review of Hellboy II. It's been a pretty good summer for movies already: but Wall-E and Iron Man were pretty much perfect A movies. We've heard about the possibility of extraterrestrial life arriving on Earth from another planet, asteroid or comet, but the mode of transport usually includes a chunk of rock falling through the atmosphere as a meteorite. But there could be another form of interplanetary transportation. Movie Downloads Get Even More Confusing Thanks To Sony

The New York Times is talking up a new experiment that Sony is running with the movie Hancock. Before the movie is even available for rental, owners of a specific Sony television with a special "internet package" (only $299) will be able to download the movie for a fee (as if the $299 weren't already enough). The New York Times piece seems to go out of its way to make Sony look like it's made some huge breakthrough with this offering, in part because it brings together the content side of the business with the consumer electronics side -- two groups that not only rarely spoke, but were often at odds with each other on certain projects. On that part, perhaps it is a step forward -- but for the overall market, this seems like a big step backwards.

Earth and Moon From an Alien's Perspective

Scientists are using the video to develop techniques to study alien worlds. 'Our video shows some specific features that are important for observations of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars,' said Drake Deming of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center... 'A "sun glint'" can be seen in the movie, caused by light reflected from Earth's oceans, and similar glints to be observed from extrasolar planets could indicate alien oceans. Also, we used infrared light instead of the normal red light to make the color composite images, and that makes the land masses much more visible.'" L.A. Art Center Building Sold to Investment Firm

LOS ANGELES—The building that houses Self Help Graphics and Art, a cultural center created in the 1978 to promote Latino artists, has been sold to an investment firm, reports the Los Angeles Times. Its former owner, the Order of the Sisters of St. Francis, claims that the center functioned very well under its founder, Sister Karen Boccalero, but has gone downhill since she died ten years ago, and said that the center has not been able to secure enough government grants and corporate sponsorships to sustain itself.

Today however, new reports have surfaced implying that no movie studios have yet to strike distribution deals with Sony for the new service, meaning the movie catalog for the service could be small to start.

Astronomers Claim Discovery of Earth-like Planet

Raver32 writes "A team of astronomers announced they have discovered the smallest and potentially most Earth-like extrasolar planet yet. Five times as massive as Earth, it orbits a relatively cool star at a distance that would provide earthly temperatures as well, signaling the possibility of liquid water. "The separation between the planet and its star is just right for having liquid water at its surface," says astronomer and team spokesperson Stephane Udry of the Observatory of Geneva in Versoix, Switzerland. "That's why we are a bit excited." But researchers do not yet know if the planet contains water, if it is truly rocky like Earth, which might make it hospitable to life as we know it, or whether it is blanketed by a thick atmosphere. "What we have," Udry says, "is the minimum mass of the planet and its separation" from its star.

We asked a photographer, Doug Menuez, and a gallery director, Debra Klomp Ching of Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, to keep notes of their experiences as reviewee and reviewer during Review Santa Fe, the portfolio review organized by the Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is one of the only portfolio events which uses a jury to screen applicants. This year, 95 photographers were selected to attend the review, which took place June 5 to 7.
