TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art

The Weatherspoon Art Museum will serve next summer as the only North Carolina/mid-Atlantic venue for the nationally traveling exhibition, TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art. The exhibition was originated by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), where it premiered, and was drawn from their renowned permanent collection. Interim venues have been the Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. TRANSactions will be on view at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC from June 20 - September 28, 2008.

Museum of Islamic Art - an international centre for dialogue and cultural exchange

The Museum of Islamic Art, which will be opening on November 22, in Doha, Qatar, under the patronage of Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, had its reception at the Enlightenment Gallery of the British Museum on May 27. It will be a new international centre for learning and creativity. While welcoming the guests, Lord Jacob Rothschild, Trustee of the Museum of Islamic Art, said, “Beyond the Museum it is also the place of learning and the platform of dialogue. [The] museum will develop a fruitful relationship with world class institution like the British Museum.”

Work on a new museum of Middle East modern art has been launched here at the initiative of Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Appoints Interim Leaders

PHILADELPHIA—The Philadelphia Museum of Art board of trustees has announced the appointment of chief operating officer Gail Harrity as the museum's interim chief executive officer and of associate director of collections Alice Beamesderfer as interim head of curatorial affairs. Harrity joined the museum in 1997 as COO; Beamesderfer was first hired in 1987 and has served in a succession of positions, including special assistant to the director for projects and assistant director for collections. Both of their appointments, effective immediately, come in the wake of the unexpected death of Anne d'Harnoncourt, the museum's former director and CEO. A selection committee will be organized in the upcoming weeks to search for a permanent successor.

Chinese Contemporary Art Gains New Audience

A new exhibit of Chinese artists opens at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art this week. The exhibit highlights a common theme in modern Chinese art: the conflict between the individual and the collective. China recently surpassed France as the world's third largest art market and prices are rising quickly.
