New Portimao museum

Portimao’s new museum.PORTIMAO’S new municipal museum was inaugurated last week by the Minister of Culture, Pinto Ribeiro. The Museum is housed in an old sardine canning factory and it hosts regular, as well as temporary exhibitions that cover art, history and general culture, all of a local and national content. On permanent show are a large selection of donated artefacts from the region, such as industrial equipment, photographs, documents and archaeological and naval pieces, among others. A local fishing boat, built in Galiza, in 1911 and restored by Portimao Town Council is being exhibited outside the museum.

New director at Herreshoff museum

The Herreshoff Marine Museum announced its first executive director in April, Lawrence A Fisher, who has more than 30 years' experience in arts management. He has worked for organisations including Walt Disney Imagineering, the Henry Ford Museum, the National Canal Museum and Mystic Seaport. The city of Wuhan in Hubei Province has decided to invest 300 million yuan to build the 1911 Revolution Museum (New Museum), creating a commemorative 1911 Revolution national landmark to welcome the 100th anniversary grand ceremony of the Revolution of 1911. The total construction area of the 1911 Revolution Museum is approximately 30,000 square meters. The Museum will shoulder four main functions: storage of 1911 Revolution relics (relics of historical figures, historical events information); an exhibition of the Revolution's history; Wuhan modern history research and academic exchanges; and integrated services.

Scottish National Museum to Undergo Face-Lift

EDINBURGH—The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh will undergo a £46.4 million renovation, the Daily Express reports, leaving the museum's Victorian building closed until 2011. Among the planned features of the renovation are a redesigned entrance hall, 16 new galleries, the creation of a larger special exhibitions gallery, and a new learning center. The museum's modern building, built in 1988, will remain open to the public.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Appoints Interim Leaders

PHILADELPHIA—The Philadelphia Museum of Art board of trustees has announced the appointment of chief operating officer Gail Harrity as the museum's interim chief executive officer and of associate director of collections Alice Beamesderfer as interim head of curatorial affairs. Harrity joined the museum in 1997 as COO; Beamesderfer was first hired in 1987 and has served in a succession of positions, including special assistant to the director for projects and assistant director for collections. Both of their appointments, effective immediately, come in the wake of the unexpected death of Anne d'Harnoncourt, the museum's former director and CEO. Thom Mayne to Design New Home for Orange County Museum of Art

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne and his firm Morphosis will design the new home for the Orange County Museum of Art, reports the New York Times. The museum, which is currently located in Newport Beach, will move to a newly acquired piece of land at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Morphosis will work with the museum over the next six months to create a design and budget for the new building, which is expected to break ground in 2013 and open by 2016.
