Reader Question: How do you get what you need from clients?

I feel exploited when a customer takes to much time to send me all the images, texts, videos, ideas etc that I need to complete the project. In the meantime, severals changes are asked from the client. A web site project could take 3 months! Eating peanut butter 3 months in a row is not very interesting (it’s juste an exemple of how poor I can be cause I wait for my money). A project could be finished in 2 short weeks (that never happened to me)… Even if I charge 40% of the total price at the beginning, I always feel that I’m more interested in finishing the project that the customer is. Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the good job in my life, but I prefer to be poor sometimes than having a boss. Growing up in Scotland, Eddie Campbell had two ambitions: to be a cowboy and to work in the circus. After neither of those panned out, he shifted his sights to comics, gaining renown for his down-to-earth depictions of the Jack the Ripper slayings in Alan Moore's From Hell. More recently, Campbell has partnered with publisher First Second on the more experimental books The Fate of the Artist and The Black Diamond Detective Agency. This summer marks the third partnership between Campbell and First Second, as the publisher releases The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard in August (it's coauthored by Dan Best). From his home in Australia, Campbell spoke with PW Comics Week by e-mail about Leotard, which is set in the 19th century and follows the bizarre life of a man who stumbles into becoming a trapeze artist for a traveling circus.

Is Live Messenger Interfering With IE or Have I Been Hacked?

When I turn on my computer, Windows Live Messanger is signed on. I never use this tool to IM. Now I cannot get more than one IE page to open at one time. When I already have one page open and I try to open another I get the response that the IE page is not responding, and that it is sending Microsoft an error message. I have logged off and shut down about seven times in a row. I evidently do not have a normal router either. I need to know how to go into my computer and check my router to see if it is sending out signals. And I need to check the security of my computer. How would I know how to tell whether I am just having problems with the computer, or if someone has hacked into my computer. Any help would be appreciated. Misseltoile

Custom Flame Painting - Lay Flames Like A Pro

I've liked flames since I was a little kid growing up in Southern California during the '50s. I can't remember if the first time I ever saw something flamed was in one of my dad's custom car magazines, or on a hot-rod driving down the street. I do remember by the time I was in elementary school I was getting in trouble with my teachers for drawing flames on all of my school papers. When old people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I told them a custom painter. By the time I was 14 I was custom painting all of my friend's bicycles in the neighborhood. By age 17, I had opened up a custom paint shop out of my parent's garage.

Meet an Artist: Kathleen Brogan Minton

I photograph just about everything. I love photographing in the studio, on the street, anywhere. I went to Randolph Community College for commercial photography and graduated last August. So far, I've shot some weddings, family portraits, bridal portraits, etc. I've been keeping up with my personal work but not as much as I'd like. I have a lot of ideas that I have yet to pursue. I did a series of semi-obscure fashion photographs at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative for a photo class I took at UNCG last semester. This was my most recent project and the photographs are still hanging up in Elsewhere.

I've got this site I maintain that I need to give access to the owners and content developers. One of them is quite proficient in HTML, the rest, well, if I tell you they only got high speed internet last year, would that explain things? I've decided I want to use a content management system (CMS) to manage the site. It needs to be easy to use for the content owners and easy for me to maintain. But how to decide? I've installed Joomla! and Drupal to test and even got e107 to try. Then I came across this article from Web Distortion: 13 free CMS options for Web Design Professionals Reviewed. Paul did an excellent mini-review of 13 free CMS tools, plus there are several other ones he didn't review listed below. But man! I didn't know I had so many to choose from! At least now I have some idea.

Review: Par 72 Golf II for Palm OS

I've never been able to play golf, because of my eyesight - I just can't follow the flight of a golf ball as I hit it - which is why I loved to play Putt Putt as a child and spent many hours on the par 3 courses. But, I LOVE to play golf simulations and the likes, and Par 72 Golf II, by RESETgame, is no exception! I was actually surprised when I first downloaded and installed the game, as I didn't expect too much since the game is played on the small screen of my Palm Centro. Boy, was I surprised when I started the game for the first time! The graphics on this game are awesome! I'll go into more detail of the game graphics later.

How Do I Prevent Lan Party Theft?

Where Has All My Spam Gone?

An anonymous reader writes "I have my own domain, which has its own email server, where I receive all my personal email. I've been getting about 800 emails a day, of which perhaps 20 are real. Suddenly, Sunday or Monday evening, the spam pretty much stopped. My volume of mail has plummeted to less than 100 a day, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any real mail — I'm still getting the email list subscriptions I'm expecting, and every time I ask someone to send me a test message, it gets through. My domain host insists that it doesn't do any spam filtering before mail gets to my inbox, and that they've changed nothing about their configuration. I run SpamAssassin on my server to mark, but not delete, spam, and download the whole mess to my home client, and I'm still seeing the occasional message tagged by SpamAssassin.

Debian teams survey results

Hey folks, As you may remember, back before I started the DPL job I promised to run a survey. Then I pestered a huge number of people to answer a set of questions and get back to me. I've taken longer than I hoped to read through all those responses and summarise them, but finally I'm done. As I said at the time, I'm *not* going to go into great gory detail about individuals or specific teams here and now. Many of the surveys include personal information and I promised to protect that. Instead, this is just a summary of the results. I'll be following up in more detail with various of the teams in the coming weeks. Why I did it: I returned the iPhone 3G after only 6 days!

I have no excuses – I should have known better than to let my gadget envy get the better of me. But, with all the new way cool features added to the iPhone 3G and the fact that my existing AT&T plan allowed me to upgrade at $199, I decided to join the other crazies in line last Saturday afternoon and spend 2 hours to get my hands on a new iPhone 3G. I’ve spent more than 20 hours since then trying to get it to do what I needed it to do (i.e., synchronize with Outlook, stay charged up for more than a day, not die when I touch a button, etc.) and then I spent another 3 hours yesterday trying to return it. For more about why I now feel like a moron, read on…

Reader Question: What education do I need?

I am in Business right now in college, and when I graduate I think I want to get into Web design. I got Dreamweaver CS3 and Flash CS3 to start with some good tutorials on those programs, and tutorials on HTML and MYSQL. I wanted to know if I should look into going to school for this, or learn on my own. I heard a lot of school curriculums are outdated for this type of thing.... Any need? Or should I start just making a portfolio? Thanks in advance.

DVD Shatters Inside Drive! What Next?

I was scared to death when I heard the loud shot-like noise that came from the DVD disk I was playing. Apparently the disk shattered inside the drive! The drive is wide open but it won’t close, and half the disc seems to be inside the drive somewhere. No other CD can go in at all. How do I take out the rest of the CD broken inside? Can someone please tell me how can I open the CD player inside the computer? I need to see inside so I can remove the rest of the disk. How did this thing happen? My computer is working fine. I mean I even turned it off and on again to see what could happen. Nothing. Can someone tell me if I should open the computer CPU case so I can remove the pieces? Thanks, Mary

Best Terrestrial/OTA HDTV Setup For an Apartment?

Newbie w/used PDA needs WLAN driver, has McAfee issues! Good stuff on this site....

I've had to try and hit the ground running because I really needed this PDA, so I'm trying to learn as I go, short on time. I don't need the Wi-Fi big time yet, but it WILL help down the road, SO: When I first acquired this Axim the WLAN utility was up and running (just not with my home network, I'll get to that.) But now status bar says the driver is not loaded. It's out of warranty, says previous owner, and the driver is not on list at support.dell.com. Anyone know where I can get the driver? I checked here, don't see it.

Seven ways the iPhone sucks

I've used iPhones and I have an iPod Touch. I love the interface, and I dig the device. Initially, I had to resist the urge to just buy an iPhone and deal with these problems, but I didn't, opting to get a Nokia N95 instead. A year has passed, and I've realized that I definitely made the right choice -- the limitations of the original iPhone (and the iPhone 2.0) are simply too numerous. Perhaps I've been spoiled by my N95 (and truth be told, I'll be getting an N96 in the next few months), but no matter how you slice it, I've decided that the iPhone just isn't my cup of tea. I tend to change phones pretty frequently, but for the past several months I have been using the HTC S620 (Excalibur). I have just loved the size and feel of it. I also use the iPhone here and there, but as a rule, I always seem to drift back to a phone that has a QWERTY keyboard. What can I say, I like buttons :o) And as another rule, it seems that no matter what phones I may use, I do eventually find myself picking up a Palm smartphone again...

I want to thank Wendell and give a big thumbs-up to his books published by Cisco Press. I studied another author in 2000 and passed the old CCNA. I spent the next 4 years working Windows/Novell projects and didn't touch a router or switch so my cert expired. I decided about 3 months ago to re-certify (is that a word?) and quickly realized that the new CCNA exam is much different than the old one - much more in-depth and added content. Aside from the OSI model and basic CLI commands, I felt completely lost. So I asked around regarding what texts were best and Wendell's were highly recommended. I ended up buying his CCNA Pack (ICND1 and ICND2 texts) and I bought a "combo" book written by the author I used back in 2000. I read the first 50 pages of Wendell's ICND1 and the combo book by "AuthorX".

What Should I Do With My Tech Junk?

Is the iPhone 3G Defective?

Truth be told, I've been writing a lot about the iPhone 3G lately because, despite the tone of my last entry, I'm still thinking about getting one. I need to replace the Q as early as next month, and, given my compendium of requirements, the iPhone remains at the top of the list. As I've noted before, the walled-garden approach isn't unappealing to me; I'm a computer-science major, but I have a business to run and a job to do. So the Mac is a decent platform to base it all on, and the iPhone goes hand-in-hand with the Mac. Is that great marketing, or what? And I'd be amazed if I ever downloaded more than two apps for the iPhone; I just need the basics for business use, and at the core that's a desktop-class browser. So I should be all set.
