Remember when cell phones were just for making calls? The new iPhone 3G, which launched on July 11, dials phone numbers, but it also runs some 800 add-on applications — developers are creating more daily — that enable you to compare hotel room prices, read Shakespeare, even examine brain scans. About a quarter of the miniature applications, or apps, are free (others mostly cost less than $10 each), so Apple users are snapping them up like candy, with 10 million downloads so far. Glitches may be common as the programs work out their debut-stage kinks, but here are our picks for the coolest of the free programs.

A sculpture of the signing of the Declaration of Independencemadefromaone-tonneblock of cheddar cheese glistened on the sidewalk of Times Square in New York yesterday as an artist's tribute to the Fourth of July. "It's very patriotic, using the signing of the Declaration of Independence, bringing Americans together for the Fourth," said Troy Landwehr, who carved the sculpture, pictured, for cracker company Cheez-It to celebrate U. S. Independence Day. He worked for a week in a 4C cooler carving the block of Wisconsin cheddar. "The cheddar has been pasteurized and will not melt," the artist said. "What I spray on it is cooking oil and that stops it from drying out and cracking. That's why it looks sweaty. It actually preserves the cheese."

OpenSUSE 11.0 does a great job on the desktop, but it shines equally as bright in the server role. Everything you need to set up most any type of server comes on the OpenSUSE 11.0 installation DVD. The trick is narrowing down the options to the ones you'll really need. While you could have a single 'do everything' box, you might want to consider separating out some of the functionality for security and reliability reasons.

Costa commissioned a monumental bronze sculpture by world-renowned artist Fernando Botero for its newest ship, the Costa Luminosa. The bronze sculpture is currently taking shape at the Mariani foundry in Pietrasanta, Italy, where Botero creates his works using the traditional technique of lost wax casting. Once completed, the work of art will be installed in the atrium of the Costa Luminosa in May 2009, when the ship comes into service. "Reclining Woman 2004" depicts a voluminous female figure staring into space, daydreaming in a reclining position with a subtle and ironic expression and with her legs in a position of movement. narramissic writes "The awkwardly named Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace (HANG UP) Act was approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on a voice vote Thursday. The bill would make permanent the long-standing ban on in-flight cell phone calls by the FAA and FCC. 'Polls show the public overwhelmingly doesn't want to be subjected to people talking on their cell phones on increasingly over-packed airplanes. However, with Internet access just around the corner on U.S. flights, it won't be long before the ban on voice communications on in-flight planes is lifted,' said Representative Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from Oregon who co-sponsored the HANG UP Act in a statement. 'Cash-strapped airlines could end up charging some passengers to use their phones while charging others to sit in a phone-free section of the plane,

"It seems we went through three patches for TrackMania pretty quickly. Luckily this is a cumulative update which doesn't require its predecessors. Codenamed 2.11.16 (2.11.13 was the last patch we had hosted), this patch fixes a problem with registering lap times. It also contains the exploit removals and bug solving that was in .14 and .15. As usual there are two versions, one for the free Nations and the other, the paid United. It'll only set you back 4.04 Megs of space, but be sure to read our review in the meantime. Still have no clue what TrackMania is despite our coverage, then check out Nations, a completely free game."
