FREE Resources in Lang Arts: related news

FREE Resources in Lang Arts

More than 30 Federal agencies formed a working group in 1997 to make hundreds of federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. The result of that work is the FREE web site. FREE stands for Federal Resources for Educational Excellence. The web sites listed below are excerpted with permission from the FREE web site. This month, we highlight web sites for language arts; in other months, we feature other subject areas.

New organization to promote art, artists

Artists in the area are banding together under an umbrella organization with a four-pronged mandate to improve the stature and economic feasibility of the arts in Dufferin. Headwaters Arts is the offspring — perhaps marriage is a better word — of the Headwaters Arts Festival and the Headwaters Arts Network. The first is an annual event that promotes the arts and the area as a centre for arts, while the second has focussed on developing communication pipelines linking hundreds of artists. Now they’ve pooled their talents and enlisted the aid of broader connections to form Headwaters Arts, the goals of which — according to Monica Schut, an artist, founding member of the Headwaters Arts Network and vice-president of the new organization — are to improve communication in the arts community, develop collaborative marketing opportunit

Brooklyn Arts Groups Spread Out

BROOKLYN—Two Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “It’s the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.

Getting the "Free" Business Model Wrong Doesn't Mean the Model is Flawed

While "free" seems to be an increasingly popular business model there are quite a few people who seems to be completely bungling what to do with "free" and then complaining when it doesn't work. Techdirt takes a look at some of the arguments surrounding why free as a business model may or may not work and why many of these arguments, while prevalent, just don't hold water. "you give away the infinite goods, not the scarce goods. Your time is a scarce good. No one is saying that everything needs to be free -- they're saying that infinite goods will be free, because of it's very nature in economics. In fact, Poole's argument is particularly weak when it comes to programmers, because most programmers don't earn any kind of royalties for the software they write.

Book News: Jenny Uglow Wins National Award for Arts Writing

The Arts Club of Washington has selected Jenny Uglow as winner of the second annual National Award for Arts Writing for her title Nature’s Engraver: A Life of Thomas Bewick (Farrar). To help increase access to the arts, “the $15,000 prize is given in recognition of excellence in writing about the arts for a broad audience, and celebrates prose that is lucid, luminous, clear, and inspiring,” the group said. Uglow chronicles Bewick’s life and achievements, the crown being the first field guide to birds for ordinary people illustrated with accurate and beautiful woodcuts. According to the Arts Club, “These woodcuts, in turn, influenced book illustration for the next century.”

Organizing the arts

A gathering of the arts community in Sackville Tuesday evening will look into developing a New Brunswick arts organization. The idea is to form an English arts association like the French language arts group that's already operating in the province. In fact, the francophone association is one of several advisors to the committee attempting to set up the new arts alliance. It would represent and promote professional and amateur artists from throughout the province. Tuesday evening's meeting is at 6:00 at the Dunn building at Mount Allison University.

SNAAP will provide a first-ever in-depth look at the factors that help or hinder the careers of graduates of arts high schools, arts colleges and conservatories, and arts schools and departments within universities, whether the alumni work as artists or pursue other paths.

Viacom Nudges Some Premium Content Online, For Free

amplt1337 writes "Debates about the profitability of 'free' continue to rage, but at least one major media conglomerate — Viacom — is pushing forward with releasing paid-for content for free on the Internet. Of course, the prospect of free and easy full-length Daily Show episodes has caused some tension with cable providers, who pay a hefty premium for a heretofore-exclusive right to distribute the conglom's content (there are obvious parallels with the conflict between labels and musicians). What strikes me as really interesting is that even an old, entrenched company like Viacom has enough vision to see the opportunity for increased profits through free distribution — provided they can control that distribution (see their YouTube lawsuit) and have discretion over just how free they go.
