Rogers Wireless is justified in its limited data plans as many other iPhone-carrying nations are doing the same or are more restrictive, a company spokeswoman tells Electronista. The Canadian company argues that a "majority" of international iPhone carriers have capped data and believes its plan to be better than these, citing as example Orange France plans that include a 500MB 'reasonable use' limit versus the 2GB maximum on Rogers' best iPhone plan. The company also tries to justify the caps by claiming that unlimited use would require customers pay for more than they need.

Stuttgart - A robotic goalkeeper is better than human keepers in Germany's football Bundesliga, its inventors boasted Monday as they demonstrated the computer-controlled device, Goalias, to the media. Players from first-division side VfB Stuttgart, including Germany team player Mario Gomez, tried last week to outwit Goalias, shooting indoors at a full-size goal mouth from 11 metres out. Scientists have since fine-tuned Goalias.

It could have been a smooth launch for the Department of Transportation's entry into the blogging world. But by choosing the title "Fast Lane" for Secretary Mary Peters's online blog, DOT was either asleep at the wheel or dizzy from the fumes of $4 gas, say critics. That's because it's the name of the General Motors blog established three years ago, GM FastLane Blog. Industry insiders snicker that DOT should have done a better probe of the blogging world for what's already in use. But GM spokesman Greg Martin took the high road, telling us, "I guess we could look at it as a case of imitation as the highest form of flattery." Peters's spokesman Brian Turmail says nobody has the franchise on "fast lane," explaining: "Our sense was that people want original thinking and an honest discussion about substantive issues more than they care about

"A University of Leicester space scientist has worked out that sending texts via mobile phones works out to be far more expensive than downloading data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr Nigel Bannister's calculations were used for the UK's Channel 4 Dispatches programme "The Mobile Phone Rip-Off". He worked out the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble - and compared that with the 5p cost of sending a text. He said: "The bottom line is texting is at least 4 times more expensive than transmitting data from Hubble, and is likely to be substantially more than that."

As Darrell Hair, the strongest, ballsiest and most controversial umpire in cricket, prepares to make his return at Old Trafford tomorrow, administrators must ask themselves what they want of their decision-makers. Do they want them to retain their omnipotence so as to be able - as Jack Fingleton observed nearly 50 years ago - to send nations into paroxysms of agony or despair with just a twitch of the forefinger? Or do they want them to become simply ornamental, little more than sweater hooks and pebble counters?

From Spencer's Benefits Reports: Companies that sponsor both large defined benefit plans and 401(k) plans see better investment returns from their defined benefit plans, according to Watson Wyatt. This generally is true because larger plans have access to a wider variety of investment options and economies of scale. As reported in a recent Insider newsletter, Watson Wyatt used 5500 form data to calculate the median rate of return for plan sponsors that sponsored both a defined benefit plan and a 401(k) plan, each with at least 100 participants.
