MITCHELL: The idea of a Festival of Pacific Arts was first put forward by the Fiji in the early 1970s as part of the cultural component of the South Pacific Games. Then it was taken to another level by the Conference of the South Pacific Commission (now the Pacific Community) in an attempt to combat the erosion of traditional customary practices.

Loud applause came from the packed out stadium as American Samoa’s governor, Togiola Tulafono, declared the tenth Festival of Pacific Arts officially open. The Australia Torres Straits delegation led the way around the stadium, the crowds enjoyed the Cook Islands and Tahiti groups’ thumping drums and swaying hips while the New Zealand delegation’s kapahaka group delivered a spine-tingling performance. Each Pacific group had just 3 minutes to give their best performance to the crowd, bef ore they each presented Govenor Tulafono with gifts from their homeland. The group from Samoa wan’t able to stick to the time limit, performing, among a number of items, the crowd-pleasing slapdance and fire dance. After American Samoa’s large Tagaloa creation production, gospel group the Katina Brothers sang the ceremony to a close.

BROOKLYN—Two Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “It’s the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.
