Dance review Ballet Boyz Greatest Hits Sadler s Wells London: related news

Dance review: Ballet Boyz: Greatest Hits / Sadler's Wells, London

In the six years they have been running George Piper Dances, William Trevitt and Michael Nunn have never had the resources to expand into a full-time ensemble. It is still basically just the two of them, the Ballet Boyz, with Oxana Panchenko as Queen Bee. Yet the two men have managed to acquire some priceless assets: a loyal fanbase and a repertory that is unique to them. It is because of these that they can get away with a programme that comes with the swaggering title Greatest Hits.

AP Arts Review: American Ballet Theatre opens season with 'greatest hits'-style gala

NEW YORK-You can't say American Ballet Theatre doesn't pack a lot into its gala nights. There were 10 separate ballets, or excerpts of them, at the company's annual spring opening at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Dance: Royal Ballet Triple Bill, Royal Opera House, London WC2

Kim Brandstrup's new work for the Royal Ballet, Rushes - Fragments of a Lost Story, was born of the discovery of an incomplete film score by Prokofiev. Originally, this was to have accompanied a 1930s cinema version of Pushkin's The Queen of Spades, but the project fell foul of the Soviet authorities. Learning of the score, Brandstrup decided to use it for a ballet version of Dostoevsky's The Idiot. This would not be based on the finished novel, but on early drafts and an abandoned scenario.

The Rembrandt Hotel Review London - Perfectly Located in London's Knightsbridge

The Rembrandt Hotel in fashionable Knightsbridge is on a busy yet surprisingly quiet street in an ideal location in the heart of London. Looking like a little gem it sits across the street from the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Natural History and it is within walking distance of other museums and some of London’s most famous shopping including Harrods department store. The Rembrandt is also close by the West End with its array of theatres, bars and restaurants. It was originally commissioned as luxury apartments for Harrods department store at the end of the 19th Century, today it still retains timeless traditional qualities interwoven with new and modern elements.

Dance review: Kirov Ballet / Lowry, Salford

It looked as though the Kirov's UK tour would start on a depressing note. An injury, visa problems and the vagaries of Russian administration had deprived the first-night ballet, Jewels, of its advertised stars, while high ticket prices had left half of the stalls empty. Yet when the St Petersburg company came on stage, they danced as though to a packed opera house. And the fact that Uliana Lopatkina was not heading the cast allowed us to focus on the dancers who were - especially the company's fast-rising soloist Olesya Novikova.

Dance review: Romeo and Juliet / Royal Opera House, London

We know that Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares have chemistry, given the roles on which they have already stamped their partnership: their sparky duelling of wits in Coppelia, their entranced reading of the Diamonds section in Balanchine's Jewels last year. But Romeo and Juliet calls for more than a sympathetic current between dancers; it requires an ability to plumb turmoil and despair, as well as extraordinary technique. And, though a crowded opera house gave Nuñez and Soares a deservedly rapt response after their debut in Sir Kenneth MacMillan's ballet, their joint performance is one that needs time to mature.

Festival Ballet, Royal Opera House, London

Ballet is falling prey to recession, too. This year, English National Ballet have managed to squeeze only one mixed bill among the Nutcrackers and Sleeping Beauties that are its box-office bread and butter, and a wistful programme note from director Wayne Eagling points out that the funding for this triple bill had only been raised thanks to a special syndicate of sponsors.

Royal Ballet triple bill, Royal Opera House, London

There is an interesting backstory to Rushes, the first major work by Danish choreographer Kim Brandstrup for the Royal Ballet. The music comes from an uncompleted score by Prokofiev for a film that was never made; its literary inspiration is Dostoevsky's preliminary notes for his novel The Idiot. Aptly for such unfinished sources, Brandstrup's idea was to make a ballet of fragmentary scenes.

Spoiler-Free Review of Indiana Jones

Following last week's sour review of Indiana Jones, Seamus123 links us to "A spoiler-free review of the brilliant new Indiana Jones film, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Much has been made of the revival of the series: is Harrison Ford too old, is Shia LeBeouf any good and can it live up to the three previous movies? All these questions — and some surprising answers — are found in Den of Geek's review." Personally I'll see it no matter what.
