Miami Heat: Art Basel Draws Naomi Campbell and Takashi Murakami Posted Dec 4, 2008

Miami wasn’t sizzling Tuesday night, with temperatures in the low 50s, but that didn’t stop the crowds from celebrating the opening of the Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami fairs. The fashion set rolled out early for a cocktail party to mark the opening of the Marni boutique in the Design District. Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni admitted she hadn’t even seen the town yet: “I don’t know because I just came [the day before last] and I stayed the whole day in the store,” she said. While her husband said the couple aren’t collectors, Castiglioni hopes to buy some art before she leaves — and she’s heading straight to the NADA art fair, which also had its opening Tuesday night, sponsored by Banana Republic. Little did Castiglioni know the art was coming to find her: Her friend Takashi Murakami, whose Miami studio is

ART BASEL 2008

The revelry that ensues each year at Art Basel Miami Beach may have been summed up best when Glenn O’Brien, Interview magazine’s editorial director, declared at a panel discussion for the Accompanied Literary Society: “Art makes you horny.” For many, the five-day fair in December is a champagne-soaked blur of brilliant art, fabulous fashion, endless parties and many a late night dancing at club Le Baron. In an ode to all that Art Basel celebrates, we asked photographer Abbey Drucker to capture Miami in all its art-fair glory. From Olaf Breuning’s sand castle at the Sagamore to an intimate dinner with Bruce Weber, Naomi Campbell and Marc Jacobs at Casa Tua, revisit those five days of artistic indulgences—or sneak a peek at what you missed—through this 18-page portfolio.

Art Basel: Partying Right on Through Posted Dec 4, 2008

MIAMI — Though some dealers confessed to using denial and avoidance to cope with stagnating sales at Art Basel Miami Beach, at least they had a plethora of parties to choose from where they could drown their sorrows Wednesday night. And by the look of things, somebody must still be doing well. Fendi kicked off the night with a dinner celebrating Design Miami hosted by Silvia Venturini Fendi and Ambra Medda at Aqua, the new development from Design District mastermind Craig Robins. Becca Cason Thrash and Rebecca Carcelles arrived together at the waterside location, having bumped into each other at the Convention Center earlier. "After a while, you just want to look at a blank wall," admitted Thrash. Carcelles was also suffering from some art-induced fatigue: "I had one more aisle to go, and I thought, I just can't.

Miami diary 3: Arm wrestling for art

The widespread negativity that dogged the opening days of Art Basel Miami Beach faded as collectors returned to seal the deal on works they had put on hold. It wasn't the feeding frenzy of previous fairs; after the first two days, the grand art deco hotels of Collins Avenue found themselves with vacancies for probably the first year since the art show's inception in 2002. Nevertheless, collectors are still buying, albeit at a more measured rate than before.

Rich Collectors Not Deterred At Art Basel

elibroadap102108.jpgArt Basel, the famous art fair in Miami, just wrapped up and the damage really wasn't so bad. (Or, was it?) Attendance was only down to 40,000 from 43,000 from the year before. But, keep in mind that this was at the main fair. The event has, in recent years, attracted thousands more hangers-on who attend the smaller fairs around the city or just go to parties without seeing much (any?) art. No official word yet on how those Miami visitor numbers came in but hotel rooms were still available over the weekend, some restaurants were practically empty, and attendance at satellite fairs was slower.

Looking at art for art's sake

Practicality is seen to be more important than art as art is considered to be more of the purpose of decorative rather than functional. Although life is full of mysteries, art is included as one of these. Art itself began as a form of delivering a message, a written language. From this came the alphabets that we know as hieroglyphics and the Chinese character. Art produced writing.
