Citing its hometown’s recent decision to cut grants to local art groups by 50 percent, the Louisville Orchestra has canceled a concert in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Courier-Journal reported. The orchestra said that it was expecting $220,000 from the city before the cut in grants was announced, and that it had already spent $70,000 on a series of performances at the Louisville Zoo. Robert Birman, the chief operating officer for the orchestra, told The Courier-Journal that the orchestra needed city financing to hire musicians and rent space for the King concert, a free performance scheduled for Jan. 18. Mr. Birman said the orchestra still planned to go ahead with two King concerts for area schoolchildren, scheduled for Jan.

This is the first ballot in indieWIRE's 2008 Critics Poll, continuing the tradition of a national survey of critics by calling attention to the year's best -- and, in many cases, most overlooked -- films, providing a meaningful counterpoint to much of the year-end hoopla. Note that some lists are unranked at the discretion of the critic. For all categories except Best Undistributed Film, eligible feature films had first-run theatrical engagements in the U.S. during 2008. Films without a U.S. distributor, screened anywhere (festival circuit, one-off screenings, etc.), are eligible in the Best Undistributed Film category. The tabulated results are being published by indieWIRE later this month.
