Report: More Job And Price Cuts On The Way For Sprint

With not enough employees taking Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel up on its voluntary buyout offer, the latest analyst speculation is guessing that the carrier will put up to 10 percent of its workforce out on the street after the holidays. It appears everything is on the table as Sprint CEO Dan Hesse prepares to make even more drastic moves to bring the house in order, the AP reports. The latest round of job cuts would come just one year after the carrier made an equivalent round of layoffs and closed almost 10 percent of its company-owned stores. If the plan goes through, it will mark the third straight year in a row that the carrier has made steep job cuts. Speculating on Sprint’s next move, Pali Research analyst Walter Piecyk said he also expects Hesse to consider lowering prices again to jump-start another attempt at making inroads again

LHC admits petition against TV channel

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Acting Chief Justice Mian Najamuz Zaman on Thursday admitted for regular hearing a petition seeking registration of a case against the owners and staff of the Geo TV channel for running a story about Ajmal Kasab. Sardar Hur Bukhari, a Pakistan Peoples Party leader, had filed the petition. The petitioner submitted that the Muslim Town police had refused to register a case against the channel owners and staff for claiming in the story that Ajmal Kasab was a resident of Faridkot. He said that the report damaged the countrys image at international level and also gave an opportunity to the Indian channels to propagate against Pakistan. He prayed that directions be issued to the Muslim Town station house officer and superintendent of police concerned to register a case against those allegedly responsible for an

Statement from the National Endowment for the Arts on the Passing of Claiborne Pell

The National Endowment for the Arts mourns the passing on January 1 of former U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell. Perhaps no single person had as much influence on the founding and early history of the NEA as Senator Pell. Beginning in 1963, he oversaw hearings on legislation to create the NEA and the National Endowment for the Humanities noting, "...as our cultural life is enhanced and strengthened, so does it project itself into the world beyond our shores." In addition to being a key force in the Arts Endowment’s inception in 1965, Senator Pell was a staunch supporter of the agency throughout his congressional tenure. Our arts organizations, arts educators, and the nation’s two million artists owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. We have lost a powerful advocate and a fine public servant.

How the mainstream media destroys local arts & culture

I find myself obliged by conscience to break the silence and to take a public stand against the media’s violent war on local arts, culture and heritage. The considerations, which have led me to this painful decision, are a casual look at the content of both the print and broadcasting media. Indeed, what the media mirrors is NOT who we are. Instead, its reflections reveal an unacceptable level of self hate and lack of clarity on what it means to put “South Africa arts first.” What makes matters worse is that the media’s war on local arts and culture has intensified.
