Brooklyn Arts Groups Spread Out

BROOKLYN—Two Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “It’s the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.

Sky to double its arts output

The broadcaster Sky is doubling its arts output with the launch of Sky Arts 2 on October 20. While Sky Arts, the existing arts channel will refocus to embrace more contemporary and cult programming, Sky Arts 2 will feature dance and the visual arts alongside classical music. The High-Definition Arts channel will draw its programming from both Sky Arts and Sky Arts 2.

Arts Council plans further three-year initiative for Traditional Arts

The Arts Council announced today its intention to develop a further three-year initiative for the Traditional Arts. The move comes after the successful completion of the Traditional Arts Initiative 2005-2008, which introduced the Deis scheme and increased support for the traditional arts through the Arts Council’s mainstream grants and awards.

Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) opened at 45.10. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 44.07 and a high of 45.79. ERTS is now trading at 45.56, up 1.62 (3.59%). Technical indicators for the stock are bearish and steady while S&P gives ERTS a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. If you’re looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider an August bull-put credit spread below the $40 range. ERTS stock could fall up to 12.

Sky to launch second arts channel

Sky Arts will be renamed Sky Arts 1 and concentrate on showing "cutting-edge documentaries, cult films, classic concerts and ground-breaking drama". Classical music, opera, dance and fine arts programming will shift to Sky Arts 2.

Yahoo! Announces New Privacy Choice

Yahoo! Inc. announced that it will offer users the ability to opt-out of customized advertising on Yahoo.com. This new option expands Yahoo!'s existing opt-out program for customized advertising served by Yahoo! on third party networks. Yahoo! announced the new opt-out capability as part of its response to a Congressional inquiry about customization sent to 33 companies from the House Energy and Commerce Committee. This new opt-out capability is expected to be available for consumers by the end of August. 10th Pacific Arts Festival officially opened in American Samoa.

Loud applause came from the packed out stadium as American Samoa’s governor, Togiola Tulafono, declared the tenth Festival of Pacific Arts officially open. The Australia Torres Straits delegation led the way around the stadium, the crowds enjoyed the Cook Islands and Tahiti groups’ thumping drums and swaying hips while the New Zealand delegation’s kapahaka group delivered a spine-tingling performance. Each Pacific group had just 3 minutes to give their best performance to the crowd, bef ore they each presented Govenor Tulafono with gifts from their homeland. The group from Samoa wan’t able to stick to the time limit, performing, among a number of items, the crowd-pleasing slapdance and fire dance. After American Samoa’s large Tagaloa creation production, gospel group the Katina Brothers sang the ceremony to a close.
