In the six years they have been running George Piper Dances, William Trevitt and Michael Nunn have never had the resources to expand into a full-time ensemble. It is still basically just the two of them, the Ballet Boyz, with Oxana Panchenko as Queen Bee. Yet the two men have managed to acquire some priceless assets: a loyal fanbase and a repertory that is unique to them. It is because of these that they can get away with a programme that comes with the swaggering title Greatest Hits.

Professional ballet returns to Greater Indianapolis with the formation of Ballet Theatre of Indianapolis (BTI)! Headed by Artistic Directors Oleg Gorboulev and Oybek Tashpulatov, Ballet Theatre of Indianapolis was founded in order to provide the Greater Indianapolis public with professional ballet productions. Gorboulev explains the motivation for founding the company, “The unfortunate demise of Ballet Internationale in ‘05 left a void in Indy’s arts and cultural scene, which we felt needed to be filled. Our vision is to develop a fresh mixed repertoire at BTI, respecting the classics while presenting new-cutting edge choreography. BTI’s Premiere Gala Performance will show the public what we hope to accomplish here.”

In 1973, when Robert Joffrey invited Twyla Tharp to create a work for his City Center Joffrey Ballet, the savvy director looked to the iconoclastic choreographer with a name in modern dance for a fresh angle on the ballet world. Last year, when Miami City Ballet director Edward Villella commissioned a new ballet from Ms. Tharp, he more or less brought the internationally acclaimed choreographer back to the ballet business after some five years of concentration on Broadway productions.

Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, one half of hip-hop duo OutKast, is collaborating with America's oldest ballet company, Atlanta Ballet, on a hip-hop-inspired ballet. Big, which premiered last week in Atlanta to rave reviews and is expected to tour Europe, sees Patton performing live on stage alongside a series of new ballet set-pieces by the company's choreographer, Lauri Stallings. The music includes Patton's unreleased single Sir Lucious Leftfoot Saves the Day and a fusion of Guiseppe Verdi's La Traviata with the OutKast track Morris Brown. For Atlanta Ballet's artistic director, John McFall, it is a natural partnership. "Hip-hop is a defining element of Atlanta," he says. "It only makes sense that the two art forms would come together at some point.

NYCB have historically adopted a stringent approach to casting, advertising their programmes far in advance but keeping the dancers' names under wraps. The idea, instigated by Balanchine, was to ensure that the choreography remained the star attraction.

The world premier of "Çaðrý" (Call), the first Turkish ballet telling the life and philosophy of the great Anatolian thinker Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, will be held in the State Opera and Ballet in the southern province of Mersin on March 20. Librettist Þefik Kahramankaptan, who prepared the project, said in a statement that he chose ballet because he thought the life and the philosophy of Rumi – and how universal they were – could be best displayed and understood by the entire world through dance body language. Three times elected as one of the top five ballet directors of Europe, Mehmet Balkan is the most appropriate person to direct a work of art reflecting Rumi in a modern way, said Kahramankaptan. Can Atilla, a well-known composer of the "Symphonic New Age" genre, worked selflessly on the music and completed the compositions in a short

It's quarter of a century since New York City Ballet was last in London, and we've felt their absence. The company, established in 1948, is associated above all with the ballets of George Balanchine, the 20th century's most influential dance-maker. Balanchine was City Ballet's co-founder, artistic director and principal choreographer, and when he died in 1983 he was succeeded by former principal dancer Peter Martins. The fortunes of the company have waxed and waned under Martins. There have been accusations of falling technical standards, and of other Balanchine muses left unconsulted and out in the cold. Perhaps such reactions are inevitable, given the intense and proprietorial passion that City Ballet fans have always felt for their company.

There is an interesting backstory to Rushes, the first major work by Danish choreographer Kim Brandstrup for the Royal Ballet. The music comes from an uncompleted score by Prokofiev for a film that was never made; its literary inspiration is Dostoevsky's preliminary notes for his novel The Idiot. Aptly for such unfinished sources, Brandstrup's idea was to make a ballet of fragmentary scenes.

Kim Brandstrup's new work for the Royal Ballet, Rushes - Fragments of a Lost Story, was born of the discovery of an incomplete film score by Prokofiev. Originally, this was to have accompanied a 1930s cinema version of Pushkin's The Queen of Spades, but the project fell foul of the Soviet authorities. Learning of the score, Brandstrup decided to use it for a ballet version of Dostoevsky's The Idiot. This would not be based on the finished novel, but on early drafts and an abandoned scenario.

Any dance fan knows how interesting it is to watch a visiting company from abroad; it is perhaps even more interesting to see one’s home company on tour. Now that I have lived in New York for 11 months, I no longer know whether New York City Ballet or the Royal Ballet is my home troupe. But on Saturday I had my first and perhaps only chance to watch both companies in a single day.
