MSC Cruises introduces two-night inaugural Orchestra sailing

MSC Cruises has launched a special one-of-a-kind cruise that will provide a unique opportunity for cruise aficionados to be among the first to sail on MSC Orchestra in North American waters – and enjoy an extended New Year’s celebration at the same time. The line has opened reservations for a two-night Caribbean inaugural cruise on Orchestra departing from Fort Lauderdale Jan. 2, 2009, to launch the ship’s first season sailing Caribbean itineraries. The ship will spend one day in Nassau and return to Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 4. Cruise-only rates for the two-night sailing begin at US$199 p.p., double occupancy. Government fees and taxes are additional, as is a fuel surcharge for the first two people occupying a stateroom. After the special inaugural sailing, MSC Orchestra will sail alternating seven-night roundtrip itineraries through

Google Has All My Data – How Do I Back It Up?

shadeshope writes "Slowly but surely Google has taken over my computing life. How can I back it up? Bit by bit with their mantra, hip image and brilliant services. Google has gained my trust and all my data. I am doing almost all of my computing in the cloud. Google Reader, Calender, Email, Docs and Notes have become my tools of choice. Even to the point where my day book, research notes etc are all on Google's servers. It was just so easy, enabling me to effortlessly work from multiple computers, operating systems and locations. I know, I know, this is foolish — all my eggs are firmly in one basket. It has crept up on me. As a long-time computer user, and committed pessimist, I have used many schemes over the years to ensure my data is safe.

Olympus tinkering with 360-degree camera and lens

Who needs a 360-degree camera and lens? Olympus thinks surveillance mavens will eat this up, this camera with eyes in the back of its head, capturing images of all that takes place within its all-encompassing line of sight. It works like the Google Maps Street View Dodeca 2360 camera, shooting in all directions, but this one has just one lens instead of an array of 11. It’s also can’t shoot 360 degrees vertically like Google’s camera can; this one takes in a 360-degree horizontal image with a 180-degree vertical view, good enough for us because we don’t have much need to shoot feet and ceilings.

Soul Calibur 4 - PS3

Star Wars cast aside, what you have here is a solid fighting game. Usually all a fighting game needs to be good is you, a friend, a couch, and some time to kill. Soul Calibur makes it so you don't even have to have your friend physically sitting in the same room as you. All you need is the couch and time to kill. Fans of the series will like this game quite a bit, and newcomers can even be brought in by it. Even new players can be taken in by this game, or perhaps a player who hasn't played any of the recent games of the series. All in all I'd say check this one out, the gameplay can be fun for hours on end, and online adds even more time to that.

IBM to release Lotus iNotes for iPhone later this year

Lotus Notes: the office software everyone loves to hate. Despite the divisive feelings that Notes inspires, many large enterprises rely on Lotus Notes to access their e-mail, group calendars, and contacts. There are times when you need to be away from the office, so Lotus makes a web client called iNotes to access Notes info remotely. IBM is now planning to add an iPhone-optimized web client for Notes, called Lotus iNotes Ultralite, later this year.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 3, Vl.4 (US - DVD R1)

Frodo had to destroy the One Ring, Darth Vader had to kill the Emperor, and Moses had to lead his people to the Holy Land. Every epic has to come to an end, and for Aang the Avatar this is it. At the end of this disc there will be no more Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I’m torn between satisfaction and sadness. I haven’t invested myself in a serial adventure this fully since Deadwood, and I haven’t been this sad to see something go since Home Movies. For this review I’m continuing my tradition of running down each episode with pretty massive spoilers, so please beware.

The best batting pitches in Tests

Last week's column focused on the best batting surfaces in ODIs; this time the attention shifts to Test venues. The general verdict from experts is that pitches all over the world have eased up in the last few years, favouring batsmen much more than they used to. England has always offered a bit to the seam and swing bowlers, but batsmen have had more than their share of success recently. The last five Tests at Lord's have all been drawn, and while the weather has had a part to play in the last two verdicts, there have still been five scores of more than 500 here since 2005. After the first day against South Africa, England seem well on their way to another big total.

Orchestra Baobab

This 2007 release from Senegal's Orchestra Baobab comes a pretty fair stretch after their 2002 comeback, Specialist in All Styles. You can consider Made in Dakar a continuation of that comeback or a comeback all on its own. Either way, it's top notch. This band has vocal and instrumental chops even sharper than in their original heyday, with guitarist Barthelemy Attisso particularly spot on: check his perfect interplay with sax players Issa Cissoko and Thierno Koite and winding, slinky solos throughout. The West African/Latin connections are as strong as ever, both in the re-worked old songs and fresh compositions.

How Do Geeks Exercise?

An anonymous reader writes "I have always been thin but all the sitting in front of the PC is taking its toll now that I'm getting older. I have begun to get a little heavier around the waist. I don't eat a lot but the weight seems to stay on these days. Most of the time I don't have the luxury of just getting out of the house/office. And being an introvert, I'm not enamored of the idea of exercising in full view of *shudder* people. I regularly do press-ups (60 per night) and sit-ups (30 per night) and some fetching and carrying, but that is all and these days it isn't enough. I need a solid and effective routine that will tone all my muscle groups efficiently. Do any Slashdotters have a regular workout routine that can be performed in the privacy of the home to stave off those pounds?"

RadioShack (RSH) NewsBite - RSH Rises With Electronics Stores

RadioShack (RSH) opened at $12.27. So far today the stock has hit a low of $12.27 and a high of $13.09. RSH is now trading at $12.89, up 0.63 (5.14%). After hitting a one-year high of $34.98 last July, the stock hit a one-year low of $11.58 last week. Shares of RSH are rising this morning with other elecronics stores this morning, as lower oil prices seem to be easing investors' worries that energy costs will cut into consumer spending. Technical indicators for RSH are bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. If you’re looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider an October bull-put credit spread below the $10 range. RSH hasn’t been below $11.50 at all in the past year and has shown support around $11.

A New Intelligent FileSystem for Gnome

IconIn these days there has been much fuzzing about the new browsing with files organizing themselves with the help of meta data. Maybe you ask yourself "What have this to do with the spatial browsing in gnome and how can it improve the browsing?". That's what I did. As I see it, the gnome people have introduced the spatial browsing so we are used to it when this new browsing is coming to town. This is very intelligent move of the gnome people and will help us adopt faster to this. This is when the spatial browsing is really making sense. I hope you see this when you've read this article.

Do All MP3 Players Sound Alike?

"Recently I read a review of an mp3 player where the author purposely chose not to discuss sound quality because, in the author’s words, 'The chosen player has a great deal to do with how you access your music, but very little to do with how it sounds…' That got me thinking. Do all mp3 players sound alike? They are all digital, so it’s the same 1’s and 0’s playing the music, so how can there be a difference in sound quality? I have tested some mp3 players myself and have noticed drastic differences. I have trouble believing that mp3 players don’t influence sound quality that much. They have different components, circuitry, software and build tolerances, so how can there not be a difference?"

Listen Online To Last HOPE Conference

Radio Statler! writes "This weekend marks 2600's last Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) conference at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. For those of you that can't make it this weekend, Radio Statler! will be streaming live from the event the whole weekend. There will be simulcasted talks, interviews with speakers and important guests, and music 24 hours a day for the duration of the con. Listeners can request music or submit questions by phone or IRC." The conference schedule (PDF) is available if you're curious about a particular seminar, though not all of them will be broadcast. CNet will be running some related stories about presentations from the conference. So far, they've written about a hacking how-to presentation. We briefly discussed the seventh and final HOPE conference last month.

MUSICALS & OPERA REVIEW: A SLICE OF SATURDAY NIGHT

VETERANS of the Fringe since first performing here in 2005, Cambridgeshire's Viva Youth Theatre are old hands at this Edinburgh lark. Maybe that's the wrong term, because the cast are all aged between 16 and 21. Still, they started this year's short

Irish Consumers Getting In Line To Go Online This Christmas

Irish Consumers Getting In Line To Go Online This Christmas - A leading Irish ecommerce firm has predicted that the number of consumers shopping online this Christmas could increase by as much as 50% in comparison to the same period last year. Magico.ie says that although traditional high-street retail activity is suffering a downturn, Internet sales in Ireland are likely to smash all previous records this year as more and more price-conscious and time-poor consumers do their festive shopping online. The company warned, however, that the Irish retail sector had not fully explored the potential of the online shopping market and was losing out on potential business to competitors throughout the world. It indicated that many Irish small and medium enterprises needed to adapt to the growing trend among consumers who were opting to order their

PS3 Now EA's Single Biggest Seller

This time last year, sales of PS3 games accounted for only $13 million of EA’s total net revenue. But this time this year? PS3 games account for $139 million in sales. Which is a 969% increase, and is miles ahead of 360 sales, which "only" made the company $81 million. Don’t bother asking us how this happened, we have no idea. As for the other systems, the PC was the second-biggest earner at $86 million (perhaps contributing to EA Sport’s about-face), with PS2 sales just behind the 360 at $79 million. If you’re after the information path less trodden, click through for the full breakdown, which includes stuff like DS and mobile sales.

The copyright issue is not being addressed in Carifesta

During all these Carifesta happenings, not once has the issue of copyright been seriously addressed. If I am wrong then the media has not adequately, if at all, given much coverage here. It is rather unfortunate because this issue has a direct impact on the lives and success of our creative professionals, our artists. With all the debate on governments’ contribution, or lack thereof, to the development of the arts, I believe it is time that this copyright issue be seriously addressed.
