Arts Council regrets the passing of Paddy Canny

The Arts Council has expressed its regret at the passing of traditional musician and founder member of the Tulla Céilí band, Paddy Canny.

Arts Council plans further three-year initiative for Traditional Arts

The Arts Council announced today its intention to develop a further three-year initiative for the Traditional Arts. The move comes after the successful completion of the Traditional Arts Initiative 2005-2008, which introduced the Deis scheme and increased support for the traditional arts through the Arts Council’s mainstream grants and awards.

Sky to double its arts output

The broadcaster Sky is doubling its arts output with the launch of Sky Arts 2 on October 20. While Sky Arts, the existing arts channel will refocus to embrace more contemporary and cult programming, Sky Arts 2 will feature dance and the visual arts alongside classical music. The High-Definition Arts channel will draw its programming from both Sky Arts and Sky Arts 2.

BROOKLYN—Two Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “It’s the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.

Scotland's Culture Minister Backs Merger of Arts Organizations

EDINBURGH—Linda Fabiani, Scotland's culture minister, said that the government is completely committed to the merger of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen, BBC News reports. Speaking at a Scottish Arts Council reception last night, Fabiani said that she was confident "a new dynamic, strategic, visionary body building on the success of Scottish Screen and the Scottish Arts Council" would be created soon. The new organization is to be called Creative Scotland.
