Arts Council awards over â,¬900,000 to individual artists

Some of Ireland’s most talented and most promising writers, musicians, film-makers, visual artists and dancers this week received more than €900,000 in funding from the taxpayer, the Arts Council has announced.

Arts Council plans further three-year initiative for Traditional Arts

The Arts Council announced today its intention to develop a further three-year initiative for the Traditional Arts. The move comes after the successful completion of the Traditional Arts Initiative 2005-2008, which introduced the Deis scheme and increased support for the traditional arts through the Arts Council’s mainstream grants and awards.

Sky to double its arts output

The broadcaster Sky is doubling its arts output with the launch of Sky Arts 2 on October 20. While Sky Arts, the existing arts channel will refocus to embrace more contemporary and cult programming, Sky Arts 2 will feature dance and the visual arts alongside classical music. The High-Definition Arts channel will draw its programming from both Sky Arts and Sky Arts 2.

Brooklyn Arts Groups Spread Out

BROOKLYN—Two Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “It’s the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.

Scotland's Culture Minister Backs Merger of Arts Organizations

EDINBURGH—Linda Fabiani, Scotland's culture minister, said that the government is completely committed to the merger of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen, BBC News reports. Speaking at a Scottish Arts Council reception last night, Fabiani said that she was confident "a new dynamic, strategic, visionary body building on the success of Scottish Screen and the Scottish Arts Council" would be created soon. 1,000 apps today, 10,000,000 iPhones tomorrow

As DeWitt notes, that is "roughly double" the number from just over two weeks ago when the App Store opened. Dion Criticizes Conservative Arts Cuts

Saskatoon Attending an environment, arts and peace festival yesterday federal Liberal Leader Stephane Dion blasted the Stephen Harper government for its decision to cut arts and culture programs. "He (Harper) seems to not understand that we need to be stimulating those programs. We must encourage different arts and culture," Mr. Dion told reporters while standing inside a tent at the We Are Many festival in Saskatoon's Diefenbaker Park. "The link between culture and the environment is the way of the future. We are entering a knowledge economy based on innovation and artists are those who bring the creativity and creation." Applications Open for Arts Writers Grant Program

NEW YORK—The Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program has opened the application process for its third round of grants. The program, which is part of the Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Initiative, awards individuals writing about contemporary visual art with project-based grants that range from $3,000 to $50,000. Categories open for the current round of grants are articles, short-form writing, and blogs/new and alternative media. Winners in 2007 included Barbara Pollack, Gary Indiana, and Richard Meyer. The deadline for applications is September 22, 2008.

Nearly 50,000 IT Jobs Lost In Past Year

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13,000 jobs in the information industry were cut in July, bringing the total to 44,000 year over year. An additional 5,000 jobs were lost in telecom this past month. The statistics reinforce a recent survey of top CIOs who indicated that they will be reducing their IT staff over the coming year. Among the many special events taking place in Jerusalem this summer, the largest and most popular attraction for tourists of all ages is the International Arts and Crafts Fair, a tradition of more than thirty years' standing, which will take place from 11-23 August.
