China way ahead of India in contemporary art

NEW DELHI: This Saturday, a show of Indian art opens in Wolverhampton, UK of all places that may just prove to be a watershed event. Manchester businessman Frank Cohen (along with advertising maven Charles Saatchi, the most high profile foreign collectors of Indian art) is striking his colours with Passage to India, an exhibition of contemporary Indian art from his own collection. A few months later, Saatchi will do the same at his new London gallery, impishly titled The Empire Strikes Back. As both men collect Chinese art as well, this will add a new dimension to the rivalry - even in art - between the two Asian giants, India and China.

Extensive exhibition of Pekka Halonen's art marks 120th anniversary of Ateneum Art Museum

Pekka Halonen was an art student when he painted a number of works in his native Lapinlahti in the summer of 1891 after his first year of art studies in Paris. It is there that he painted his famous work depicting the reaping of a harvest, with his brother Antti modelling as the man in the foreground sharpening a scythe.

VA firefighter tattoo artist leaves his mark

Mar. 18--The first thing you notice about firefighter Donnie Wedding is his art. It's hard not to. Nearly every visible patch of his skin is covered with it. His fingers, hands, forearms and neck all sport intricate color tattoos -- some of them fire-themed -- that he designed himself. When it comes to his profession and his passion, Wedding wears them both as his sleeves.

Eli Broad's Decision to Keep Art in Foundation Stirs Debate in Art World

Eli Broad's announcement that he will leave his vast collection of contemporary art to one of his foundations rather than donating it to a museum has provoked debate in the art world about the implications of his decision, the New York Times reports.

August Rush DVD

August Rush is the tale of Evan Taylor, brilliantly played by Freddie Highmore, who lives in an orphanage in New York. Evan, an 11 year-old, hears music in his head, and wished that he could actually play what is inside of his head. Of course, this causes his mates to ridicule him incessantly, and Evan ends up running away. Evan feels that his gift is from his parents, and he believes that the music inside of him will eventually lead him to his real parents. He finds himself in the big city of New York, letting his music lead him to his parents.

Art World Data Visualization

Jennifer Dalton's work very often takes up the art world as its subject matter. Art about art--and the world that revolves around it--can often be cheeky at best, but Dalton manages to pull it off with grace, wit, and originality. She also tends to merge newer and more traditional media in doing so, ranging from internet art to paintings to temporary sculptures. On March 8, Brooklyn-based alternative art space Smack Mellon will open a solo show of her work, entitled "Jennifer Dalton is a Scientist--Not!". This moniker comes from an entry written by a gallery visitor on one of the surveys Dalton facilitated over the last year, in preparation for the show. As the gallery notes, the project puts a unique spin on the concept of site-specific art by revolving the work around the space's audience.

Court: Sex blog book suit can continue

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A former staffer of then-U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine of Ohio can continue his lawsuit against a publisher that released a book based on an online sex diary that included him as fodder, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday. The opinion by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis asks a lower court to allow Robert Steinbuch to search for specific evidence held by Hyperion Books. Particularly, the court said Steinbuch needs to prove Hyperion had "continuous and systematic" contact with bookstores in Arkansas to show his lawsuit against the publisher has merit. Hyperion published "The Washingtonienne" in 2005, written by former DeWine aide Jessica Cutler. The book relied heavily on Cutler's blog of the same name, which highlighted her sexual relationships with several men while living in Washington, D.
