The Art Schools Issue: Art Starts Here

Art schools are key players in shaping the contemporary Canadian art scene. And the winter issue of Canadian Art, launched this week, reveals the ways this influence is exerted, today more than ever. Whether it’s NSCAD stewarding a crucial conceptualist legacy, UQAM and Concordia anchoring Montreal’s new-art boom, OCAD exploring theories of creative economy or Emily Carr building one of the nation’s best painting departments in photoconceptualism’s shadow, our art schools issue covers it all.

Looking at art for art's sake

Although life is full of mysteries, art is included as one of these. Art itself began as a form of delivering a message, a written language. From this came the alphabets that we know as hieroglyphics and the Chinese character. Art produced writing.

ART BASEL 2008

The revelry that ensues each year at Art Basel Miami Beach may have been summed up best when Glenn O’Brien, Interview magazine’s editorial director, declared at a panel discussion for the Accompanied Literary Society: “Art makes you horny.” For many, the five-day fair in December is a champagne-soaked blur of brilliant art, fabulous fashion, endless parties and many a late night dancing at club Le Baron. In an ode to all that Art Basel celebrates, we asked photographer Abbey Drucker to capture Miami in all its art-fair glory. From Olaf Breuning’s sand castle at the Sagamore to an intimate dinner with Bruce Weber, Naomi Campbell and Marc Jacobs at Casa Tua, revisit those five days of artistic indulgences—or sneak a peek at what you missed—through this 18-page portfolio.

Art tourism By GEMMA CRUZ ARANETA

ART tourism is in vogue thanks to people who passionately pursue their love for art and satisfy their curiosity about different cultures. Oftentimes, frequent travelers eventually become amateur collectors of sorts, accumulating souvenirs, handicrafts and artistic finds during their trips. Soon they yearn for non-material cultural experiences so they look for art festivals and fairs with corollary activities like concerts and plays. There are professional collectors known to be seasoned travelers and are, always in search for emerging, promising artists whose works they gobble up as future investments or to enhance their inventory. Art tourism is enticing, educational and informative; they can be festive and memorable as many of them include special film showings, vibrant theatrical performances, and unique concerts featuring prestigious

Miami Heat: Art Basel Draws Naomi Campbell and Takashi Murakami Posted Dec 4, 2008

Miami wasn’t sizzling Tuesday night, with temperatures in the low 50s, but that didn’t stop the crowds from celebrating the opening of the Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami fairs. The fashion set rolled out early for a cocktail party to mark the opening of the Marni boutique in the Design District. Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni admitted she hadn’t even seen the town yet: “I don’t know because I just came [the day before last] and I stayed the whole day in the store,” she said. While her husband said the couple aren’t collectors, Castiglioni hopes to buy some art before she leaves — and she’s heading straight to the NADA art fair, which also had its opening Tuesday night, sponsored by Banana Republic. Little did Castiglioni know the art was coming to find her: Her friend Takashi Murakami, whose Miami studio is
