(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 16, 2008 ) South Africa -- Floating and Falling, an exhibition of monotypes and mixed-media oil paintings, is Bronwen Findlay’s first solo show in Johannesburg since her major painting exhibition at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2006 and a show of prints at Artist Proof Studio in 2007. Findlay has made unique monotypes and prints at DKW before (her first major exhibition of prints, A Blanket Story, comprised work created in the workshop in 2005), but in Floating and Falling, she demonstrates a new confidence in the medium. Working in layers of colour – blues, fuschias, greens, metallic gold and silver – and using a variety of inking techniques, from heavy painting to application with various rollers, Findlay has sought not to mimic her canvases but to reinterpret them.

The desire of composers to imitate or evoke extra-instrumental subjects solely by instrumental means is ancient. Obviously when text and staging are added to music then the composer has no limit on what he or she can express to an audience. Hence opera, oratorio, lieder, etc. But take away those words and stagings what does the instrumental composer have left? Still left to serve him is the imitation of the sounds of nature and of specific musical instruments other than the ones being used directly by him. What else? The power of metaphor, analogy, and suggestion.

Some parents have a strange habit of clicking pictures of their babies in the buff. With the Internet and blogging, a few parents are also putting up those pictures for all and sundry to see. Either there should be legislation against allowing parents to click naked pictures of their kids, or some sort of age of consent where kids have a say in whether the world should see those pictures. Parents need to be told that 2-year-old Ratan’s picture showing his little wee-wee is really not funny when said Ratan, now 32, brings home the girl he wants to marry.
