For an industry blessed with several geniuses, the biggest budgets and the largest egos, the art of advertising hangs infrequently on gallery walls. But its power is undeniable - just as designers can name record sleeves that pulled them into their profession, art directors cite old Benson & Hedges layouts that did the same. These are images etched deep into our collective cultural consciousness, whether we like what they stand for or not. Presumably, this is what the upcoming Advertising Art exhibition is trying to redress, and on paper it ticks all the requisite boxes. Traditional photography stalwarts like John Claridge and Barry Lategan mix with more recent art directors like Paul Belford and Dave Dye. Living legends like Sir John Hegarty are also involved.

Jennifer Dalton's work very often takes up the art world as its subject matter. Art about art--and the world that revolves around it--can often be cheeky at best, but Dalton manages to pull it off with grace, wit, and originality. She also tends to merge newer and more traditional media in doing so, ranging from internet art to paintings to temporary sculptures. On March 8, Brooklyn-based alternative art space Smack Mellon will open a solo show of her work, entitled "Jennifer Dalton is a Scientist--Not!". This moniker comes from an entry written by a gallery visitor on one of the surveys Dalton facilitated over the last year, in preparation for the show. As the gallery notes, the project puts a unique spin on the concept of site-specific art by revolving the work around the space's audience.

A retrospective of the work of Malaysia’s most successful art group to date, the exhibition represents a multi-faceted view of the development and artistic practice of the collective that now includes Ahmad Fuad Osman, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Hamir Soib @Mohamed, and Masnoor Ramli Mahmud. Four venues display their work, including the main exhibition by organiser Galeri Petronas. The other three venues, comprising the Annexe at Central Market, the House of Matahati in Ampang and alternative art space 12 Art Space Gallery, offer access to a broader range of people than the mainstream art community.
