Skopje, May 8 (MIA) - The 36. May Opera Evenings will be opened Friday with "Tzar Samuil" opera by Kiril Makedonski, which is the first opera performed at festival in 1972. Ognjan Draganov from Bulgaria is director, maestro Sasa Nikolovski-Gjumar is conductor, whereas Igor Durlovski will perform in a leading role.

New York City Opera has commissioned American composer Charles Wuorinen to write an opera based on Brokeback Mountain, a love story about two U. S. ranch-hands that won three Oscars when it was turned into a movie. The opera house's spokesman Gerard Mortier said in a statement on Sunday that Wuorinen had accepted an invitation to compose an opera based on Annie Proulx's short story. It is slated to premiere during City Opera's 2013 spring season. "Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so," Wuorinen, 70, said in a statement. Anthony Freud, OBE, general director and CEO of Houston Grand Opera, has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of Opera America, the national service organization for opera. The election took place at the annual Opera America conference 2008 in Denver on June 11th. Freud will serve an initial term of two years and succeeds Charles MacKay, general director of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

Philips selects Opera browser for connected TVs

Oslo, Norway - June 10, 2008 - Opera Software today announced that it has signed an agreement with Philips Consumer Electronics. Under the terms of the agreement, Philips has licensed the Opera 9.5 SDK for Devices to make the Opera Web browser available on a new range of connected TVs aimed at the mass consumer market. ZURICH: For over a year Cecilia Bartoli has concentrated her skills on repertoire once sung by the great 19th-century mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran. An enthusiastically received Decca compact disc called "Maria" was followed by a slew of concerts, including a marathon in Paris on March 24, the bicentennial of Malibran's birth. Now Bartoli has spearheaded a revival of an obscure opera written for Malibran, "Clari," by the French composer Jacques Fromental Halévy, which opened last week at the Zurich Opera House.

Opera today made Yandex the default search engine on Opera's mobile Web browsers for customers in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Effective immediately, anyone using Opera Mini in Russia and the CIS can access Russia's most popular Internet search service directly from the start page of the browser.

Opera Mini Update for Palm OS

Opera Software has released a "silent" update for the Opera Mini browser. The new build addresses issues that were causing problems with the latest v4.1 release on many Palm OS devices. Opera reports the new version (4.1.11355) has better memory handling on Palm devices which should correct the missing image problems. There are also a few minor BlackBerry specific fixes and a bookmarking bug correction.

Opera extends Gears support

Opera Software announced today it will support Gears in its desktop and mobile browsers. The inclusion of Gears in Opera’s main browsing products supports Opera’s vision of transforming the browser into a full platform for applications, regardless of device.
