Sculpture Fires Beer Bottles at a Wall at 373MPH: related news

373mph beer bottles fires sculpture wall
Now this is what I call art. It's a sculpture/robot that flings empty beer bottles at a solid wall at 373 MPH, smashing them to smithereens. As the exhibit goes on during the day, a pile of green shards of glass piles up under the wall. It's a comment on rock and roll or something, but I'm a simple man. I just like seeing things smash. If you're like me, you can go check out the cannon at the SUPERDOME exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Hit the jump for another shot of the cannon in action.

The cell wall is an indispensable structure for the survival of bacteria and a target for antibiotics. Peptidoglycan is the major constituent of the cell wall, which is comprised of backbone repeats of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM). A peptide stem is appended to the NAM unit, which in turn experiences cross-linking with a peptide from another peptidoglycan in the final steps of cell wall assembly. In the normal course of bacterial growth, as much as 60% of the parental cell wall is recycled, a process that is not fully understood. A polymeric cell wall is fragmented by the family of lytic transglycosylases, and certain key fragments are transported to the cytoplasm for recycling. The genes for the six known lytic transglycosylases of Escherichia coli were cloned, and the enzymes were purified in this study.

This year's New York State Fair has brought something new to the time-honored butter sculpture. It has turned the tradition green. When the fair ends, the state university's College of Environmental Science and Forestry will convert the sculpture's 900 pounds of butter into biodiesel for the college's vehicles — enough to power five round trips to the Adirondacks.

The day when robots take over all of mankind's most tedious chores has just got a little bit closer. The Pictor wall painting robot will climb walls all by itself and paint them using various science-fiction sounding techniques. It'll apparently use a "cleaning laser" to prepare the wall for painting, then use an "airless nozzle" to paint the wall - which apparently results in no "atomised spray". And apparently that is a good thing.

I only read two sections of the WSJ, partly because it's behind a pay wall, though there are ways around it. Their new Mobile Reader for BlackBerry drops the entire paper for free, constantly updated, right to your phone in an interface that actually works. Silicon Alley Insider says it's the best newspaper app for any phone yet.

No one can accuse Pixar Animation of not taking big risks with its latest feature “WALL-E,” which tells a love story between two robots (who speak three words between them) against the backdrop of an Earth that’s been destroyed by waste and consumerist overkill. While the film’s most daring gambits pay off in full, the inclusion of a standard outwit-the-bad-guys storyline dulls the magic that “WALL-E” so often achieves.
