Sky to double its arts output

The broadcaster Sky is doubling its arts output with the launch of Sky Arts 2 on October 20. While Sky Arts, the existing arts channel will refocus to embrace more contemporary and cult programming, Sky Arts 2 will feature dance and the visual arts alongside classical music. The High-Definition Arts channel will draw its programming from both Sky Arts and Sky Arts 2.

Arts Council plans further three-year initiative for Traditional Arts

The Arts Council announced today its intention to develop a further three-year initiative for the Traditional Arts. The move comes after the successful completion of the Traditional Arts Initiative 2005-2008, which introduced the Deis scheme and increased support for the traditional arts through the Arts Councils mainstream grants and awards.

Brooklyn Arts Groups Spread Out

BROOKLYNTwo Brooklyn arts organizations, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn and Urban Glass, will expand within the building they already share, thanks to a $17.3 million makeover paid for by the mayor's office, city council, and office of the Brooklyn borough president, reports the New York Times. The renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street in Fort Greene's BAM Cultural District will provide BRIC Arts, which presents visual and performing arts programs, with a 20,000-square-foot gallery and performance space; Urban Glass, a glassmaking studio and school, will get gallery and retail space and a walk-in workshop. “Its the first project that is really advancing the goals of indigenous arts groups that are already in the BAM Cultural District,” said Leslie Schultz, executive director of BRIC Arts.

The International Arts and Crafts Fair, 11-23 AUGUST 2008

Among the many special events taking place in Jerusalem this summer, the largest and most popular attraction for tourists of all ages is the International Arts and Crafts Fair, a tradition of more than thirty years' standing, which will take place from 11-23 August. The colorful fair, known as Khutsot Hayotser in Hebrew and named after the small arts and crafts lane at the foot of the Old City Walls, features 150 Israeli artists and artisans, an international art exhibit from 30 countries, attractions for children, creative workshops, theater, dance and musical performances. Produced by the Ariel Municipal Company (a subsidiary of the Jerusalem Municipality) at a cost of $1.5 million, the fair is expected to attract over 150,000 visitors.

Athens - A US arts collector returned a priceless artefact to Greece on Wednesday as the country continues its long battle for other treasures such as the Elgin Marbles to return to their rightful home. Greece received a fourth century BC bronze vase and remains of a marble tombstone depicting a young warrior from US art collector Shelby White barely a year after it launched a campaign for their return, relying on evidence they were smuggled out of the country.

Dion Criticizes Conservative Arts Cuts

Saskatoon Attending an environment, arts and peace festival yesterday federal Liberal Leader Stephane Dion blasted the Stephen Harper government for its decision to cut arts and culture programs.
